I'm a sucker for bargain tube amps

Help me say no. Last night I bought another Marshall Plexi reissue and 412 cab. As I'm leaving, the kid's brother pulls out a mint looking Ampeg SVT Classic telling me he doesn't like it because of how heavy it is. Eight bills. I need it about as much as I need another Marshall. Should I go back and snag it too?

No. That's not a super fantastic price. Not bad, but certainly not a once-in-a-lifetime type of deal. It's a good amp if you have a use for it, but otherwise, I'd keep the $800 and enjoy the marshall.

Do you gig all the time? Do you really need another amp? And the last questions is: Can you afford it? If you feel you can answer yes to most of those questions, then go ahead and buy the darn thing!

it's a normal used price for that amp.

and remember it's about $300 every time you re-tube the amp.

there's a word for people who retube their entire amp when one tube goes out...suckers. at worst, in an svt you should have to only replace 3 power tubes at a time unless you had a serious catastrophe. and never should you have to replace more than one or two preamp tubes at the most. me, i only plan on replacing one power tube at a time...i'll just find a match for the other two. some amp techs love to tell you to replace them all so they can take your good tubes and use them themselves. me, i don't play that game.

anyway, $800 is about the going rate for a used svt cl. not a particularly good bargain, but not a bad price either if it's in good shape.

The SVT looks almost like a new amp. I doubt I'd use it, other than to have a little fun jamming and checking it over, and comparing to my 73. Tube amps have been a hobby I've had since 1980. Maybe I'll make an offer. I've read that the tubes on SVT's will last just about forever if not used hard. The one I've got now has 15 year old tubes and it still works fine. These Marshall tubes are 11 years old and working great. I only replace tubes if there's an obvious issue.
Just a reminder to always test the bias on a tube amp you just picked up. Just cleaned up and biased this Marshall, and it was set cold. Another plexi I have was was hot, like it was set for 6550's. Another model 1987 50 watt head I got had tubes 10mA apart, and also set too high. This new one is a never messed with SLP from 94, and has Dagnall transformers. I'm guessing it's a reissue of a 1969.

+1

Get it if you rrrrrrrrreeeeeeally need one. Pass if not. You should be able to find another in this range if you change your mind with out too much scouring.

Considering that you have a 73, I doubt you'd need the CL. The CL is nice, but it's no vintage SVT, and IMO has a pretty different tone.

Tube amps are fun and so are bargains.

But in this case, the amp isn't *that* special and the price isn't *that* great. So if I wasn't especially needing an(other) SVT, I'd leave it for someone else.

Every once in a while, I recall what my dad used to say: it's not a good deal if you don't need it.

Was this in the Philadelphia area? If so, then you don't need it: pass on the info to me and I'll buy it .

Just outside Phila. I will do that if I pass. Still thinking on it though.
