Impedance Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm wanting to run an extra cabinet with my Fender Studio Bass amp (a combo amp). The problem is that the amp is designed for an 8 ohm load only. I recently came across an impedance matching transformer, the Weber Z-Matcher. It looks like just what I need, but it will handle only 100 watts, whereas my amp puts out 200. I can't find any similar item on the internet that will handle 200 watts. Does anyone know of an impedance matching transformer that will work for me?

I wouldn't even waste the money, better to buy a different amp that can handle 8 or 4ohm impedances, some them even 2 (allegedly) and that's just mono-block heads, 2-channel (so-called stereo) amps can handle that on each channel making your choices double that of a straightahead amp which is already double that of the 8ohm limit amp you have now.

honestly, i'd disconnect the speaker and plug into an 8 ohm cab or two 4 ohm cabs daisy chained in series instead. you can get headboxes for the head, too, if you don't want to lug the whole thing around just for the head. or i'd just use it as is. looks like a great head, not sure about the cab but looks pretty solid for back then.

From what I see in the schematic is has an 8 ohm output transformer. Unlike SS, tube amps are perfectly happy running lower impedance loads than the rating. I wouldn't hesitate to run an 8 ohm extension, especially as the internal driver can't make use of more than half that amp's power at best.
