Impedance Question (Yes, I've read the stickies) ;)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, I feel like this is a simple question with a simple answer, but I can't find the answer anywhere, and the 'keywords' I'm using just bring me to more general information so I can find the answer to this specific question.....

Is there a way to wire a cab which has two 4ohm speakers using two input jacks so that one would be wired in series give an 8ohm load and the other in parallel to give a 2ohm load?

I understand how to wire a cab in series, and how to wire it in parallel, I'm just not sure if wiring it both ways to two different jacks will work, or if the wiring of one would necessarily 'jump' the other resulting in 'other' impedences, or shorting out, or destroying things altogether.....

This is not possible.
You could use a doubleswitch with multiple poles to achieve this. This way you could easily switch between 2 and 8ohms.

It would be a nice feature though, great idea.

Yes. The old B25 cabs were like that, switching between series and parallel for 4 or 16 ohms. You'll want a double pull/double throw switch I believe. There was a schematic on here at one point for wiring, let me see if I can drag it up.

Agreed. You would need an appropriate switch to make this work.

JohnK_10's V4 cab mod included a nice looking one to switch between 2 and 8 ohms - it was a red rocker that was labeled 2 and 8. You'll definitely was something that can handle passing current from your amp without being a weak point in the chain.
