Info on PV Dynabass head??

Sign in to disble this ad
I picked up a old PV Dynabass solid state head at a yard sale the other day. I Googled around for a while looking for some info on it but came up basically empty. It has two channels marked clean and bass. Silver and black with a cloth grill on front. Two speaker jacks on the back marked internal and external (any ideas what that means?). I opened it up and found one of the big power caps had swollen and leaked. The cap is a Temple 6000uf 45vdc 85C...can I use a 6800uf cap for this? I can't seem to find the 6000uf but haven't tried PV yet. Beyond that it looks real good! Any info would be awesome!

Doesn't sound like any Peavey I've ever heard of. The only Peavey Dynabass I know of is a bass guitar. Internal and external speaker jacks would be found on a combo amp; that would also explain the grill cloth. Pictures are needed.

A friend of mine used to have one of these. He bought it new ~1972 and he ran it with two Peavey 3x15 cabs(!) The whole rig stood about 6' tall. I remember that when he bought it, it was one of the first ones to ship and he had talked to Hartley personally about it. This was one monster rig back in the day!

I haven't been able to find any info about the amp anywhere online -- including the Peavey website. Maybe an email to tech support at Peavey would get some info for you?

What kind of info are you looking for or is it just trivial facts?

Here's a quick pic...more coming. Anyone familiar with this thing? Or better yet worked on one? I took a closer look into this thing and noticed some pretty severe damage to four diodes on the power block. Also an exploded cap on the output board. A schematic would be the best.

Well I managed to get this thing going...salvaged some parts from an old PV mixer and a few from Radio Sack. Sounds good! Still no info on the make or model.

Congrats on getting it running. I've seen very few (if any) Peaveys this old. Waiting for more pictures.

Very Cool!!

That is one of the first generation Peavey Bass amps... I would say somewhere in the 1966-1967 year range.

I had this and 2 cabinets each with 2x15 eminence speakers.
Sounded great!!!

If you ever think about getting rid of it give me a shout.

The rig that the guy the is talking about with the six 15" speakers (2 cab with 3 in each) was a second generation rig. It would totally shake your world!!

I was an early endorser for Peavey.

There's a very different looking version of this amp on ebay right now. Looks much more 70's.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

Peavey Dynabass

I have a PV Dynabass amp, with matching 18" folded horns. It is a Series 500 amp module, with angled alumnium faceplate. It states an output of 250 watts @2 ohms. I belive it was from the mid to late 60's, I got it in '80. It appears to be the same, or very similar as the e-bay item posted by Major Softie. I'd be interested to know if the fabric front version pre-dates, or is subsequent to, my metal faceplate version. And as far as the internal and external speaker connections, I wonder if that might be a cut-down combo?? I've cut down 2 combos in my career, just 'cause I liked the amp, and the speaker sucked. Also, just an item from a dim memory, the earliest Dynabass amps were combos, before they got larger. And in conclusion, good luck getting any help from Peavey Customer Service, home of Hartley "What have you done for me lately" Peavey. I have e-mailed them repeatedly, with no response at all. Mini-rant over, and good luck with your new toy...Cheers...

That's a little surprising, as I've always heard wonderful things about Peavey's customer support, but then, that's always been about the service people. Have I been misinformed, or have your questions been going to a different department, like "sales," and they don't see any sale possibilities in your questions?
