I'ts down between these 2 setups (GK)

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been offered to buy a used rig:

Gallien Krueger 1001rbII
RBH 4*10
RBH 1*15

OR

GK 800RB (used) along with NEO4*12 (new)

The used rig will 1001rb will cost me 1800 USD while the other setup with the top being used and a brand new cabinet will cost me 1700 USD.

I havent tested them yet, going to eventually, but I would like some input on your thoughts first.

What would you pick and why?

I'm going to say if you can deal with transporting 2 cabs to a gig, then go with the 1001rb option. It gives you flexibility in what you can use at gigs (1 cab or 2) and you get a ridiculous amount of power out of the 1001rb.

I'd be afraid you'd run out of headroom from the 800rb before you could utilize the Neo 412 to its potential...

Now if you could do a 1001rb-II and a Neo 412... .THAT would be the winner.

I agree the 1001rbII + the NEO 412 will give you more, but I would like to A/B both heads with the 412 before deciding. The 800rb has a unique voice that may or may not suit the NEO better.

What kind of sound are you going for?

I've had a 1001RBII and currently have a 410RBH, 800RB, and two NEO212's. To me, the best sound out of the lot is the 800RB with the 410RBH. I think the 1001RBII had too much power to really give me the grindy 80's rock tone that GK is known for having.

I can't mix em because there are 2 different sellers and they won't split the rigs. What I really need is something with a really clean and bright low end. I mostly get my "tone" out of the VT bass-pedal. Right now I'm involved in a rock/grunge-project, and the sound is pretty close to what Mike Inez from Alice in Chains has (YouTube - IMV Trailer: Mike Inez, bassist for Alice In Chains)

Is there a reason why the RBH cabinets are much more expensive then the NEO's?

RBH cabs are in GK's high end line. They are heavier. Sound is amazing. Especially with the 410 and 115. Those cabs with the 1001 will kill some of your drummers brain cells, hopefully anyway. I do prefer a 800rb, but for 100bucks more you have two cabs and more power. And, as you said, the VT does all the Tone stuff. Get the 1001 with the two cabs.

The 1001RBII will give you more clean power before getting to a grindy tone. It also can give you a deeper low-end with the 5-string button pushed. Since Alice in Chains does do some drop tuning, maybe this would be the best choice along with a pedal to give you some grit if you need it.

The 800RB has a built-in low-end roll-off that is part of it's normal tone.

The RBH cabinets are more sensitive (loud) and have more complicated wood construction, thus the increase in cost.

Thanks for the answers. I play a 5-stringer and really urge for a CLEAN low-B when I play.. the grindy tone comes from my VT bass-pedal. Well I think I've made up my mind right now, and will go for the RBH cabs and the 1001rb. I don't think I can get much more power for that low amount of cash.. (from scandinavia here, and everything is really expensive).
