i love how when you follow the link to youtube and view the comments, it's the eternal Rob vs. cliff vs. jason banter. I don't even like metal, and i think it's a funny conversation to have haha

Randall: he uses an alembic elan, 5 string with custom JpJ pickups.
He sandwiched them, it really sounds lovely, look at stu hamm's urge 2 bass.

No prob YogaBear. If you watch the "A Year and a Half in the Life of" DVD you will see Jason using SVT rigs in the studio with Bob Rock and at some point you see them sitting under the stage or being loaded in while touring. SVT Classic's have such a wonderful harmonic grind to them. It's possible to emulate it pretty well but nothing ever quite duplicates it.

Bob Rock had a lot to do with Newsted's great sound on the Black Album. And the fact you can actually hear bass guitar on the record at all (which is not the case on other Metallica discs).

Bob Rock is a bassist himself and on all the records he's produced the drums and bass sound absolutely kick-ass.

Yes I do. Although it is quite large and heavy in real life

I worshipped Jason back in high school (still do really). He's the man. No offense to Metallica, but once Jason left/got kicked out I lost interest.

jaywa: For Bob to be such a big fan of the bass I wonder why he chose to mix it so poorly on the "St. Anger" album? It was his chance to shine and it sounds like mud IMO.

Some more info.

I read too that he hurt his back trying to catch a falling amp head (SVT) and he still has issues to this day.

Randall: Thanks, I already took a peak at it, it's unreliable, it doesn't say anything about time, it says he uses swr amps, and swr is nice, but no grindy sound.

But I love D-180!
seems to be that the bass 400+ has a d-180 circuit?

(clears throat).... I use a SWR Interstellar Overdrive that will grind it's way through a steel door. Just sayin... certain SWR products can get it done.

Bassboy: That clears up alot!, thanks!
I tried a sm500, didn't like it, if i touched the gain it wouldn't do anything.

Yoga: Yeah, I've owned two SM500's over the years and you have to put an overdrive pedal in the line somewhere to get 'em to really growl. But that's not a bad thing because the amplifiers are super clean so you get to work from a neutral starting point. The SWR IOD (or Stella) isn't in production anymore but you can occasionally find one used. They are nothing more than a pre-amp that is actually a tube amp with pre & drive tubes. They sound wonderful!
