I got 2 old James B. Lansing c40's loaded with 130A 15" woofers. The precision in the 130a's with their 4" voice coils offer amazing, earth shaking sound at 16ohms a cab. With the two both hooked up at 8ohms, they'll take maybe 60-80 watts, but dont be fooled, they'll compete with my 450 watt Ampeg anyday. It's amazing what theses old things can do, the precision their made with. Anyone elso out there got a cab loaded up with 130a's or old JBL drivers? What about the adventurous few who use old Home Stereo JBL's for their rig? |

I also use AlNiCo 2205 PA woofers for bass. In the rig below I'm using a 150 watt AlNiCo JBL K145 with an Eden VT300 tube head which has the capability of producing over 600 watt peaks. |

| | | | Thats a lot of wattage for a JBL
I am also a fan of the D130F, arent they the ones in the good ol Fender bassman 15's?
I say the JBL 130 and 140 series were and still are some of the best speakers ever built |

Early in my musical career, I blew up a few JBLs. I learned to listen for any signs that the speaker was under "strain." It's my experience that JBL speakers can handle a lot more power than they are rated for if you are careful.
I'd like to find an old Fender Showman/Bassman 2X15 cabinet with D130F speakers.
What kind of surround is on the 130A?

I have them loaded in an old Peavy 215 cab, wired stereo(cab is divided from factory).
It sounds fantanstic!
In my earlier days I used EV's...you could by 2 of them for the price of one JBL. EV's didn't sound as smooth, but would take more abuse/power.
I got these (JBL's) from a neighbor that was one of the bass players for Question Mark and the Mysterians(96 Tears). He had them in a homebuilt console stereo...it was at his garage sale. I asked if he cared if I took the speakers out and junked the rest. He said OK......I got them for $40.00!

I definitely don't want to be looking at a reconing bill, especially authentic JBL. ...could buy a new Eminence for less.

| | | | Tell me about it, re-coneing on mine ala parts-express is estimated $100-$120 each, and one of mines cone is starting to look really brittle and the paper is really nasty looking.
ddbass you make me jealous that you have that pair just sitting in storage, FIRE EM UP! |

| | | I built these in the 80s and have been using them ever since. Back then I looked for EVs but they were really expensive compared to JBLs, which I always liked and already had one (D140F). I had a pair of K120s and a pair of 15s; the D140F, and the other a K140 which I reconed and IIRC, took a cone for the updated E140. |

The D140F is a beautiful sounding driver, warm and very musical.
That being said one should be careful not to put too much power through it.

| | | I believe the D 140 and D140F are the same. The F indicates that it was made for Fender.
I love my Bryston. Best amps in the world. Period.
And made in Canada too. I just took mine in to the factory last week. After 25 years it had a scratchy pot. Its now good as new. |

I built 2 x 2 x 15" cabinets with Altecs but I would have equally chosen Lansings. See Tonehenge, my stereo Bass rig on my website Home Page www.escutcheonmedia.com
Built for Bass on Large sized venue gigs or as a P.A. for medium sized venues.
Rickenbacker Stereo Bass. It is 36 years old and still functions. Only Problem! Weight! they weigh a hundred pounds each. I am not so young as I was. Need a hand and sack barrow to shift them. Good luck making your choices of gear. |

Do you know dimensions of the box?
Would really appreciate it! |

| | Keepin' the Groove Alive ! | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Stax 1966 | | | I have always used K140's or E 140's in a 215 cab. Right now, I'm using an LDS 215 cab with E140's, powered by a QSC 1202 and an Ashly SC-40 preamp. Very sweet tones and surprising bright high mids. I have a tweeter on the cab ( high passed ) that I turn up about half just to get some sizzle. As far as power goes, I use the 30 hz filter on the QSC and bridge it. I don't get rediculous loud, but those old JBL's seem to be very happy in this cab. Bummer is, of course, at 44" inches tall, it's awkward and heavy, and not the best solution cab for going up stairs, etc. But for roll it in gigs, it's always my first choice. The K140's have a more mellow tone, not as edgy as the E140's, but very nice speakers for roots , blues music, imho. I'm having Don at LDS build me a light weight cab ( relatively speaking ), a 12/12/6/1 for gigs where I know the load in is problematical and/or I need to pound out more volume, but the JBL rig is always my first choice, if possible.

You think that's bad? My guitarist lost a '56 strat in the same incident.

It's a JBL Cabaret Series 4625B cabinet. It's 4.5 cu. ft. The dimensions are 30 3/16 X 20 1/8 X 18 3/16 in. Made of Baltic birch and it's heavy, close to 100 lbs.
It's my favorite bass cabinet!
