This will change though since I have plans for a fEarful cab utilizing 3015LFs, so the last of my many JBLs will be going on the market, but not for twenty-five bucks (Thank goodness people still want them)!
Point taken.

I own another Acoustic 406 (wide) cab that was loaded with`80's JBL 2220H's when I bought it. I was told by someone that JBL 2220H speakers were ment for a long throw type P.A. cab and probally would not be too good for bass guitar. Were they wrong!! These speakers sound incrediable loaded in this cab for old school rock!
You know maybe I should just let my ears be the judge of what will work for me other than a bunch of over technical and over analyzed opinions of what should work for me and what won't!
Thanks for opening my eyes and adding some good honest truth to this tread!
I think you're confusing deep and bassy with zero treble or midrange for 'old school'.

Old school to most players is exemplified by one man - Jamerson. He didn't have amps CAPABLE of deep and bassy - he had a TON of low mids and mids, not a lot of bottom, not a lot of top, and very little headroom, and was frequently in full-blown distortion. Deep and bassy, like Familyman Barrett (Bob Marley) is another thing ENTIRELY, and requires tons of power, and tons of speakers. He frequently used three or FOUR very large amps to get his sound; I've seen pics of an Acoustic 360 double cab rig, and Ampeg SVT, AND A big old Sunn folded horn rig simultaneously - 20+ speakers, many hundreds of watts; Jamerson used an old 30 watt (on a good day with fresh tube) Ampeg B15N with one fluffy old 15 and barely enough power to keep up with a very tasteful drummer without crapping out. And it was frequently crapped out. Listen to Michael Jackson's 'Stripped mixes' - Darling Dear - a masterpiece of music, to be sure, sublime bass playing, but sublimely awful, distorted, at times totally crapped -out bass sound. It's not that they LIKED that, it was the best there was back then - they had no other option.

Exactly. You'll muddify the entire band/stage/PA; the soundmen will want to murder you. And with an antique V4B, you won't have anywhere NEAR enough power to drive anything without distortion.

Been there, done that, about 30 years ago.

OK its an old post and have ignored all the above advice but I put a JBL 2225h in my cab. Reckon I have the bass and amp to deal with big low end.

Will report back

The cab is solid and has 2 open ports in parallel to the top left and right.

Used to have 2 crappy horns am guessing about 5 inches.

Would appreciate any thoughts on options such as just keeping the ports open or maybe putting in 1 or 2 midrange drivers?

I'm one of those who still want JBL speakers. I've been using them since the '60s and still enjoy their sound. New JBL speakers cost a fortune. Fortunately, they can be found on Ebay in the $100~200 range.

My cabinet of choice right now is a '60s Ampeg Fliptop 2X15 loaded with AlNiCo JBL 2205 speakers, the PA version of the K140. Pretty good Jamerson sound for sure!

Here's probably my favorite JBL cabinet with a K145 speaker. Not much high end but tons of clean low end.

Eden 300 with the 2x 2226 would be beastly.

I had the 2226 as a stand in before the 2225. The 2226 @ 600w 8ohms was a bit strong for my Mark Bass (350@8).

Havnt cranked the 2225 live yet but from mucking about it sounds great. The Etone cab i use is similar to the single JBL cab with front ports just a bit shorter.

Cheers

OK the JBL 2225h is a bit muddy at the low end but can handle tons of power without getting slow.
