JBL 4893 - Calling Tech Gurus

So I ended up with this after some credit card abuse

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=260677478869

(The price may seem high to you USA folks, but it's good buying here in Australia.)

Suggestions on how I can use this would be greatly appreciated. I have 3 F# basses and mainly play fretless. My only fretted has tapewounds

JBL cites a response of 38-400, would 400hz really be the upper limit of a 14" speaker? It seems low. I can biamp to some Apha 6's (4 of) or one of my 4 4x8 quads if needed

It would be nice to use standalone with my Acoustic Image Focus on top

Thanks for the help guys
Al

They mean what they say about the upper end at 400 Hz. It's a subwoofer, so the cab was tuned for those lows, at the expense of highs. It doesn't have as much to do with speaker diameter as you might think.

Thought that would be the case, just wondering if someone like Bill FM etc might know if they were internally low passed or had experience with the particular woofer used, being that it's not an off the shelf model.

FWIW I have some 8" kevlar subs I bought for my car that would be lucky to get to 100hz, though I have heard (and measured) plenty of large "subs" tuned for lows that were still able to produce high mids when played full range

The 400hz top end is a +/-3dB figure so its just rolling off there so you will need to biamp from there up if you want upper mid and top and either of your 4 X 6" or 8" will do well
for that job.
In fact its going to be a very serious rig like that.
Those JBL boxes with the 14's don't suck down there.

Yes. You need tops to handle above that. JBL intended it to be used with 4892s or 4894s.
