Snuck home to pack a banjo to ship out and give Monique a quick first roll in the hay in my studio. Ran it into the effects return for my Puma 500. Interesting tone difference between the preamp of the Puma and the Monique. I always defer judgement until a gig or three but my initial reaction was that after running Monique I didn't dig the Puma front end - a bit harsh. I didn't get to run my Rob Allen yet, and different basses had different character. Have a gig tonight and I'll have tracks to compare from previous shows.

Discussed the transformer/line out issue with James. In his words, "trials with transformer input showed no benefit." The Line Out is just too good.

She gets here tomorrow. Giddy with excitement. I'm working 24 hours on Friday however and won't be able to play it until Saturday. There goes plans to take the family to get a Christmas tree.

Gigged Monique last night. One of my usual venues so I know the room, but we played as a bass/percussion duo so that was a twist (last two times we've done bass/drums/sax/vox, and before that bigger band). Being a duo setup I had a lot of stuff on my plate between loops, arranging on the fly and singing on some tunes. So why not fold in a new piece of gear?

Like any piece of tube gear, I'm going to need to learn to "play" it. It ain't just knobs to twiddle. The eq points are interesting and so far useful. Oddly enough, I like cutting the mids just a bit (usually the opposite with me) and adding just a bit of high. The sensitivity is the wild card. I find that around 11-12 is a good base sound, then if I want some more edge I dial that up. (disclaimer - the sax player usually plays the heads )

I forgot to mention that Monique only sounds terrible when pairedwith Spectors and Mesas.

Seriously, I expect you will love it. Let us know your initial thoughts!

I had rehearsals with 2 different ands this week.... Tons of Monique complements. I am loving this pre.

Methinks it may be time for a Monique club. Anyone in?

It sounds excellent You have to plug in the AC and turn the power switch on and actually play those basses. Those are the only caveats.

If you applied that caveat to TB, there would only be 14 posts on the whole site

Operational question- leave Monique powered up between sets? How about over the course of the evening in the studio? Often I'll be playing for a half hour, then doing other things for an hour or two, then back to playing. Typically I tend to avoid power cycling tube circuits.

Longer than an hour and I'd turn it off. At a gig I'd leave it on the whole time, though.

That's bad, at least you didn't miss the Fed Ex guy like I did. The band took a short break over the last couple months and we got together last night to satisfy the craving to play. This was the first time that Monique has been out of the house and the guys told me to sell the Mesa and keep the Monique.

I just finished my band room in my basement and had the chance to A/B my Monique and Mesa D-180 side by side.

The Monique sounds better but the Mesa still kicks serious @$$. I was going to sell the Mesa this week, but I am definately keeping it for now.

I have two Mesa's and you are right they do kick a$$. I am keeping one for a backup. Only thing I have to really add to the Monique is my Sansamp BDDI deluxe for the extra eq.
