Jule (Monique) Line Driver

Jule designed this unit for folks needing to run extremely long lines from the line out of their Moniques. He had several requests for this so here it is.

It's a "what goes in is what comes out" unity gain piece. My experience is that in use it seems to add some gain. What I now understand is that pres suffer losses when interfacing with boards or amps and without those losses the signal seems boosted.

Well it's cool. A look at the pics will show you it's simple.

I have no gigs coming up where I can test it's long line capability. I can see where this would offer a different tone set to your FOH in addition to the output of the XLR. Like Mic, DI and strong Pre tone. To clarify, the Monique's XLR is more DI clear than the fat that comes out of the line out. Two different transformers.

Some of you may be thinking will it drive a Berg IP. Yes. The volume available is at least twice that of plugging directly in. It's more but I'm being conservative here. There would be many small gigs where this would be acceptable. Of course their is no gain control so you have to set your IP. The components and power supplies are audio hi-end. That clear nothing in the signal path is the result. As of today I've only tried active basses.

Between the Monique and an IP310 the Line Driver can give a gainy driven tube head sound that doesn't overdrive the input of the IP. All the settings you would use for big and clear become intense and you have to dial back the gains to get your big and clear. I can see bassists using this to extend the capabilities of the Monique. Another way to say it is that it gives the Monique's gains a much wider travel from clear to grit edge etc. into the IP.

A cable with TS can be used as well as one that is TRS. It will push discreet Power Amps just fine.

Jule goes for sound and his component selection reflects that. It sounds or doesn't sound really good. No noise or artifacts. It sounds completely accurate.

The Jule Line Driver is now available with an XLR output jack. Earlier versions had the TRS.
Though it was initially designed for the Monique, the Line Driver has been selected by bassists as their only device between bass and power amp.

Challenge

This Line Driver started as a challenge to see if we could run the Line Out from Monique more than 500' for a customer in Europe doing stadium events. It turned out to be a 700' run.

It worked.

Simple. A 1/4" TS "guitar cable" in and a balanced XLR out.

It also does something I never intended (thought of), and that is it allows me to plug directly into the Line Driver from my Bass and run directly from the Line Driver all the way back to the mixing board - no matter how far away it is.

That of course gives up the playing characteristics and tone control of Monique, but it works. It is like having a magic crazy long guitar cable.

There is no amp of any kind out there that could not be driven off the wall (if that is what one wished to do) with the Line Out of Monique through a Line Driver.

For those looking for excruciating details, I'm using a THAT Corporation 1646 balanced line driver IC, and a TI OPA 1600 Series High Performance FET op amp front end. Solid state and extremely high end audio.
