Just Got an Ampeg v412

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just got an Ampeg V412 guitar cab. I'm gonna pick it up Thursday. But while I was at the guitar shop, the salesman said that I should be careful with using my bass head because the cab can only handle 200w.

I have an Tech 21 Landmark 300 head that puts out 300w, so I'd assume that running it a full volume would be bad for the speakers. But I've never gotten the whole watts thing. Can someone explain that to me, please? I've searched and every answer does not quite explain it to me. And, is there a way that I can use the cab with my head and not blow the speakers? I was planning on sending the head to both my GK 410 BLX and the Ampeg V412 at the same time.

Thanks y'all,

Will

To put it simply, watts is a power output rating. The higher the number, the louder you'll get.

You have a head capable of putting out 300watts and a cabinet rated to safely handle 200watts. If you listen carefully to your sound (listen for the speakers farting out) you'll be okay. You don't want to turn the amp up all the way, obviously.

Even though you might not be running the head at full volume you could still pump out the full 300watts. This is possible if you have levels turned up in your effects chain, making the input level to the amp higher and therefore making the output higher. I would recommend setting all your levels on your effects so that the volume is exactly the same as when all the effects are turned off.

Groovy. Thanks very much. I'll be sure to do that!
