Is it just in my head???

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok. I'm gonna try and explain my(my friend's) dihlema as best I can. He's got a G-K rig(1001 head/410/115) that he's had for several years(8, I believe). The head is in a 6space rack with a Korg DTR1000 tuner, Furman PL-Plus(older series), and a Samson wireless unit. When the rig is turned on, the Furman has the front LED's lighting up into the right side of the green into the orange, and sometimes the red. Not sure if that's part of it, but here's the problem. When he plays, his sounds like a 70's synth fuzz fading in and out. We've made sure it wasn't the bass(active and passive), the wireless, or the cords. He believes it's in his head(sorry for the pun). I don't know if it's that, or maybe a ripped/blown speaker. I'm not sure, but it seems more electrical than something physical. Especially since it fades in and out like someone is messing with the volume knob. I'm not sure what else to add, but I'll provide as much info to help a buddy out. Thank you.

Try plugging straight into the amp. If the issue persists, it's probably the head. If it doesn't, run it through each item, one at a time, until you find the cause.

Yes. Bypass the Furman. If you determine that the Furman isn't the problem, start disconnecting cabinets until you figure out if it's the head or one of the cabs.

Could be his FX loop..............

Have your friend plug an instrument cable into the send and return to see if it clears up the problem.

Ok, so my friend ran a direct cable to his return, and it played fine, but the problem still continues when plugged into the input.

could be the switching jack is getting intermittent..I would try plugging a cable into the send jack, then to the return jack. Also....everyone...please note when "racking" different pcs of gear that they can have differences in the way they're grounded and can cause a difference in voltage potential between each other and cause major problems. Had a guy with a GK head and a Beringer tuner with the problem and it took out a opamp in the preamp section also a guy with a Carvin head Korg tuner and samson wireless...super loud buzz...there was like 35vdc between the pcs....so beware..

That's why I use all of the Beringer products together! I get great value and no buzz.

Ok smoov. So you're saying to remove the head from the rack, plug it directly into the wall, and the bass directly into the head, switching from the input/fx loop send & return. What if the problem persists while plugged into the input of the head? Is it something worth saving?

Long shot......if his bass is active check the battery. Sometimes the simple things are worth a look-see.

We've already tried plugging in his passive basses too, and it still continues.

Ha, funny you mention that. I recently plugged in an acoustic/electric I have that I hadn't played amped in years. It made a hell of a racket. It was the battery for the pickup.

Ok, here's an update to the problem. My friend and I have narrowed it down to the boost knob in the bi-amp section of the head. It sounds like it's scratchy when moved back and forth from 7 o'clock to 5 o'clock. It might need to be blown out with some air, needs a new pot, or something else. The problem also happens while playing, without moving the knob. Aynone have an idea from this discovery? Thank you.

yes- the pot is either dirty, bad, or both. Could also be a loose connection at the pot's lug(s). Time to open it up, if you feel qualified.
