Just Picked Up a Bag End S-12D

I just picked up a Bag End S-12D cabinet. I haven't had a chance to really push it yet, but so far, I'm really impressed. I have had Euphonic Audio, Eden, Trace Elliot, Ampeg, SWR, Carvin, and Gallien Krueger cabinets, but none of them have ever had a 12" speaker, so this is my first 12.

I was worried that I would miss a tweeter. I had no experience with Bag End, and my first impression is that they know how to make a cabinet, and they do it well.

This thing sounds great. Great dynamic range, really thick lows with punchy mids. It is a little shy on top without the tweeter, but nothing a little bass EQ and amp EQ can't handle.

I'm looking for a small head to go with it. Eden Time Traveler, Genz Shuttle, etc. If anyone has any good recommendations to pair with a single 12, let me know.

Recently acquired a pair of S15-Ds and have never been so happy with my sound. Bag End builds stuff to last and to sound great. Hope you get a lot of satisfying use out of your cab and that you find the perfect head to power it. You're asking the right people!

The S12-D is a nice cube of warmth.

Mixes well with other cabs too. I've wondered what it would sound like with the little GK head, might be better off with the MB500 or Fusion for headroom.

Fun cabinet!

Loved my S15-Ds. The nice, flat frequency response curve makes small EQ tweaks relevant and I never missed the tweeters for a minute.

Yeah, they seem to have fallen out of favor around here a bit. Not sure why. I guess they don't have a fancy sounding name, but it buries most of the other cabinets I've ever used. I'm loving it.

I saw that on the local CL too. Would have bought it if I hadn't just bought a Genz 12T to go with my Shuttle combo.
My vote for a head to go with would be a Shuttle or Streamliner. I have a Shuttle 6.0 and it sounds excellent with a single 12".

Thanks. I'm always weary of buying a head without ever having played one, but I know the Genz stuff gets a lot of love here. I will have to check one out sometime.

I am finding that I am hearing nuances in my tone that I hadn't noticed before. I'm hearing more subtlety in blending between the pickups and dialing in that tone I hear in my head. I'm really liking this cabinet.

I liked my pair of S12's too. I used a MarkBass F1 and I thought it was a good match. I'd boost the lows a bit and leave everything else alone.

Update. The cab turned out to be an S-12RD, which was a cab thyey designed for guitar to break up when pushed. Once I got a head and started pushing it, I had to get rid of the cab. It wasn't for bass, and sounded like it. I got a GK MB200 head and a GK NEO 112-II cabinet. I'm loving the tone. The GK head is just killer.

There's a pair of Birch S-12 cabs at Atomic Music in Beltsville, MD. Nice shape, rare cabs.

Bag Ends really aren't out of favor. Several of my friends gig with them on a regular basis. I have a coax 1-10, coax 1-15, coax shallow 2-10 and S-15 full range cab.

Been there at least a couple of months now. They also had two S-15C cabs IIRC a couple of days ago that have been there even longer.

I'd been waiting to move out my Bag End BX-D 210/410 for some S15D's for a while now. Picked up some PF115HE instead so I'll have to live without Bag End soon!

I talked to the owners at Atomic today about the Birch S-12 cabs. They were on consignment, now they're off so they have some room on the pricing. Under $300 each. I played through them today, they sound great in a no tweeter kind of way. If I could find a way to justify it I'd own them... cool cabs.

Me too Brad. Me too. My present rig is just excellent so I can't justify it. They are in great shape too.
