Just venting...

Sigh...

After doing some research (including TB input) on getting a lighter cab to pair with my G&K 700RBII, it seems the next thing to try is either a G&K Neo 2-12 or MB 2-12. (I tried a MB-410 and was not impressed but have heard that the ported Neo series sound better.)

GC seemed nice enough when they offered to have me buy both the MB and Neo and return the one I don't want. (Also thinking about trying a Markbass cab but haven't heard any feedback from anyone who has paired that head to a Markbass.)

Well, after waiting a week, I discovered that the guy at GC ordered the wrong cab and, to add insult to injury, he's not sure when he can get the Neo but it will probably be 3 weeks!

I called every Ash and GC in my area (NY) and the only thing anyone stocks is the 4-10 Neo. (Which is almost as heavy as my current cab.)

I thought Neos were popular but nobody stocks them.

I didn't think this whole thing would be such a production!

Thanks for letting me bend your ears!

It may not be a problem of GC or even GK...Neo has become a questionable prospect, now that China has tightened it's grasp on the commodity and also raised the pricing of what does make it out of the country. It sounds to me like you just picked the wrong time to be looking for lightweight speakers.

I would also think that most people who work at GC probably don't have a handle on the rare earths market...

Yes, I am aware of the neo shortage but I didn't think it would happen so quickly. I assumed (incorrectly) that G&K and other makers using this raw material had sufficient inventory to keep final product levels afloat for a while.

Now I know why I should have had kids...roadies!!! :-)

Gallien Krueger Bass Speaker Cabinets
They are in not in NY but ask for a quote (really good pricing when you ask for a quote), usually free shipping and no BS about if they have in stock or not.
Did you try the Mark Bass cab? You may like it.

Hi B-String!

Now, I'm even more confused and frustrated!!! According to one of the reviews on the link on their page, the Neo 2-12 is a perfect match for the 700RBII. But, if you read the description, it is now only available in 8 ohms. The 700 is a 4-ohm head. I know it will run but (and please forgive if this is a stupid question) won't that diminish the sound/efficiency of the rig?

Grrrrrrr!! Lots of emotions going on here!!

All other things being equal, the difference in output between identicle 8 ohm and 4 ohm cabs is barely audible.

The positive side of having an 8 ohm cab is that it leaves you room to expand.

That head will run an 8 ohm cabinet. That's what I would prefer to have. With a 8 ohm you can add another cab later, if you want. With the 4 ohm you are stuck using one cabinet.

OK, then! Thanks for teaching an old dog new things! (I was never schooled in such matters.)

Given the scant availability of the Neo 2-12 cabs, I'm wondering whether to cancel the GC it may never come in order and go with someone who has it in stock.

As I said I only tried the MB4-10 and it pushed no air at all. Not a terrible sound but no balls whatsoever.

Sure would like to hear the darn thing first, though....

Less emotions now!

RMC Audio are really good people to deal with. Give them a call if you need some product info to ease your mind. SS amps (like the G-K) will run a 8 ohm load just fine as stated above. Tube amps if they only have a 4 ohm tap should not be used with a 8 ohm cab on its own, you should run two 8 ohm cabs to make a 4 ohm load on the tube amp.

Should add don't try to run 2 4ohm cabs with the G-K, two 8ohm cabs max.

I'll call them tomorrow and see what goes down.

According to their site, if I don't care for it, I would have to pay freight plus either 10 or 20% restocking. So, this one will take some thought...

Thanks for the help!

Well, the Neox 212T looks great as well. But.......nobody stocks them so I can't try before I buy. That's what's killing me.

To be honest with you, all the cabs mentioned (the G&K, the Genz and the Avatar) all look pretty good. Although the Genz is a lot more $$$.

Yeah, at this point I have no idea what to do.....

Been there before and I am still there now. Bite the bullet and purchase everything - return what you do not like. Take a road trip to meet people on Talkbass who have the same gear you are looking at trying out. If you wanted to try what I had, I would certainly invite you over! Most bass players are pretty nice dudes. Guitarists are sometimes a little crazy.....

Of course! I play with two really good guitarists in my cover band! Just relating the fact that guitarists seem to be the ones that want to destroy their gear on stage and crank their amps to "11". While bass players covet their gear and are happy just to hear themselves over the drummer.

Gearhead, nice of you to offer!

I wouldn't even know where to post a, 'Does anyone have this cab I can try?' thread!

By the way, B-String, bassists are just as crazy but we don't do it as loud! :-) (Gearhead just posted a similar thought as I am writing this.)

I'll make some calls and think it over and post the results of the saga!

Thanks, again, for all of your input!!

(Okay, too many exclamation points...)

Oh I know we be a little spun but lets face it:
#1 Keyboardist
#2 Guitards
#3 Drummer or lead singer
#4 Bassist

(Someone has to keep those clowns together....hence we be a little nuts too)
