Just want to tell someone, that's all!! .....

.
I just ordered a pair of Eminence KappaLite 3012LFs and I'm about to build me a new fEarful 1212 sub to try!

I found the speakers cheap at Bronx Speakers and Electronics.
$179.99 each.

I'll have the cab built, ready for them when they arrive here in Oz.

Can't wait!

What do you plan to use for mids and highs?
Or is this for PA use?

Nothing at all. I thought about it but decided against it for now.
I have been running twin 15" boxes with no tweeters for 20 years or more (playing bass through them) and always loved the sound of them.
I have always EQ'd enough top end for my personal taste without the need for tweeters or mids.
I generally taper the mids off substantially.

Ok, others may howl with dis-approval, but that's the sound I like!!

I may build a second box, perhaps a fEarful 1212/6 later if I like this one and maybe want a bit more mid/top end to compliment the booming bottom I anticipate I'll already have!

(BTW, I plan to buy a new Genz Benz Shuttlemax 12.0 in the near future to run them.)

I'm ready to try something different: modern, high output, low weight drivers, so twin Eminence 12's are it.
I'm sick of stuffing around with low power amps and speakers, struggling for volume and presence against the two Marshall wielding guitarists and heavy hitting drummer in my band!

You might want to post your idea for running a 1212sub as a "full range" cab in the fEARful forum befor you start building. fEARful

I can't really speak for greenboy, but I believe the 1212sub was designed to be crossed over to a mid driver at about 700-800 Hz.

If I remember correctly, the 3012LF has some gawd-awful nastiness in the midrange that necessitates low-passing it fairly low.

I get it. All of the hard work, none of the benefit.

No, it's all good mate!

It's usually 600-700Hz that I wind off with EQ when running my old, stand-alone 15s.
It'll be interesting to see what I need to do to achieve a similar sound with the 12s. I've never owned 12s before.

I really enjoy experimenting with cabs, trying new stuff out.

Enjoy, and let us know how it sounds. It's good to think outside of the "box", but not on this board. You are only allowed to be a follower. Shame on you!

I've always put whatever speaker in what ever box. GO AHeAD and flame away.

Most time it worked rather well. I put an 18" in a 212 cab long ago and got many compliments from bassists.

If John Entwistle could hang an 18" speaker with a nail in a cab...and he did, good enough for me. Sometimes it gets a little high tech here on TB.....

Sometimes I like the tech...sometime I don't.

Some of my best sounding cabs have been mash-ups.
I put piezo's in cabs a very long time ago.....WITHOUT cross-overs. And I do like cabs without them(tweeters, mids, etc) too.

I even wired a 15" speaker as a microphone with a 200 watt head with headphones as a directional mic....in the 70's. WOW! ( Many years later, I had read somewhere George Martin mic'd the bass on Penny Lane using a speaker for a mic )

But I DO listen to the masters here and respect their advive.

It's all about the BASS here.

This not a derail...responding to "think outside the box"

Sometimes the fact we are not building a "Hi-Fi" gets lost?
