I have a Orange OBC 115 cab and love it. I just picked up a empty TL606 and need to put a speaker in it. The OBC 115 & the TL606 have about identical boxes. I was planning on putting a Kapalite 3015 in the TL606. I called Orange to see what speaker is in the OBC and they say it is a standard Kapa 15A. Other than saving 9+ pounds and paying $50+ what would be the advantage of the 3015 over the 15A ? Any ideas on how the two cabs would match up? Thanks

If you're going to run the cabs together, get the 15a. If you're going to use the TL606 standalone, get the Kappalite 3015. It'll take twice as much power and almost surely be smoother on bottom.

When I saw that it had a Eminence speaker I thought it was the 3015 and was surprised to learn it was the 15A. For $650 I would expect the best. Glad I got it used for $350 . Guess I'll order two Kappalite 3015's and put them in both. I will not mind loosing 9 pounds out of the Orange ether.

I've loaded some Tl606s with 3015s... and they put out MORE sound for sure (compared to old EV15Ls and EV15Bs). But better? It's a tough call. It's quantity vs. quality argument... and in this case, sometimes quantity IS quality. I don't really like the sound the 3015's produce, but they produce so much of it. that I'm thankful. Does that make sense?
If I'm a bass glutton, then I'd rather have 20 pounds of Velveeta than 1 pound of Brie. |

Not enough highs when compared to the EVs. But beware: the magic of the EVs is on-axis only. Here's my lament...
Now I've got enough cabs that I can see the value in the 3015s.
I think the EVM 15Ls and 15Bs might be more old-school tone-wise, but the 3015s deliver a lot of sound for the (light) weight.
I found the OEM EV15LBs and EV15Ls to be more like "guitar" speakers, and the 3015s to be more like PA speakers.
There are others (Bill Fitzmaurice) who can speak to the 100% true details of why the 3015 is a superior speaker. If you want to fill a room with low-end thump, the 3015s are killer. But if you want something a little different... a little more old-school (with all the negatives that entails), the EV15Ls are still a great (heavy-assed) speaker. |
