Kappalite questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright, I know it may be odd asking this on a bass forum, but has anyone played GUITAR thru a Kappalite-loaded cabinet??

I ask because I am trying to finish my rig to handle bass and guitar thru the same rig, and its down to the speaker. From what I read on here, the Kappalite is great for bass, so it sounds like a good starting point.

I will be using a modeller with cab sims, like an Axe-FX or Digitech GSP1101.

(not interested in other suggestions unless it also can handle a low B on bass, and high end on guitar. I may add a tweeter/midrange in the future but right now trying to do it with one 12" driver.. NOT going to use separate cabinets so dont suggest)

You can use one to make a fairly flat response cab, then use a guitar amp sim into it. Guitar cabs/speakers are very coloured, which gives them their sound, and also makes them kind of bad for bass.

I'd say a midrange or mid-high is going to be essential in making this work. I have the much talked about Carvin LS1503 and use it with an amp/FX simulator and it sounds very good. I have to drop the bass EQ almost to nothing and turn the mids and treble up, but it sounds very good. Louder than a 50 watt tube 2x12, for sure, and with whatever tone I want to put through it. It's especially good with AEG's. It really gives the fullrange of tone just like plugging into a PA...'cause it is Are you using the 3012HO or LF? If you're using the LF, I think you could get by with the Alphalite 6CBMR. The closed back would allow you to get by without building a separate compartment withing the main one. I'd build a tweet into it also with an on/off switch if you play AEG.

Might check out Duke LeJune's Thunderchild cab...it's more or less what you're looking for. Send him an email and see what he thinks/suggests. Cheers!

It would depend on the cabinet, really.

A Kappalite - like any other quality speaker - can sound like total poo when put into a cabinet poorly designed for its T-S parameters.

With a modeler it should be pretty good, but a midrange is very much a necessity, a tweeter isn't.

If you're trying to cover from low B to the top end of electric guitar with a single 12" driver, the Deltalite looks like a better candidate to me as far as bandwidth goes, though it won't have the displacement-limited power handling of the Kappalites. If you crank in a lot of EQ below 100 Hz the 3012HO would work, and would be the better of the Kappalites for this application imho.

I can also vouch that a POD (with cab/mic sims) sounds quite good through this man's Thunderchild cab. Not my first choice of guitar rig since I happen to have a couple of nice tube combos/heads, but it works great.
