■ENCLOSURE TYPE: Bass-reflex via front-firing CornerPort
■FEATURES: DCS control and feature set w/ 3 system presets
■FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 24-120Hz +/-3dB
■INPUTS: L/R Line-level RCA jacks, L/R High-level speaker binding posts
■MAXIMUM ACOUSTIC OUTPUT: 116dB @ 30Hz 1/8 space, 1m
I have never played a guitar. I was looking at getting a sub-$200 bass guitar and an adapter to hook it up to my home theater. If i enjoy it, I will pick up a amp/sub combo later and a nicer guitar.
Will this work for a while if i keep the volume at a normal volume? I dont care about the Onkyo speakers all that much, I been waiting for an escuse to upgrade.... but I dont want to blow them for no reason.
Thanks in advance.
p.s. Feel free to suggest a good starter bass guitar for me. I am a 6'1" guy that likes blues, heavy rock, metal and sometimes a little funk. |

After all, if you were to record a song and play it back on your home system, wouldn't that be the same thing??
Maybe not....
My concern is this...
If you're jamming through a bass amp, you are likely to be playing at a MUCH higher volume than what would end up in the mix of a recorded song.
I'd be afraid that you cannot control your levels, and that you'd smoke those speakers in a hurry.
But if you can really keep the levels reasonable, you should be OK - and you should be pleased at the sound as well. Play through a stereo chorus and it'll sound real nice.
Edit: After reading other posts, I'll say that I "assumed" you had the input levels worked out. As in, through a Pandora's Box, a Pod, or something like that.

No, it isn't the best idea and it doesn't work very well but it can be done. Keep the volume on the bass way, way low. It worked with a pair of regular old stereo speakers. With your sub/satellite system, there may be too much content above what the sub is playing for your little satellites.
You can get cheap, used little practice amps for chump change, that'll work better. So would plugging into a mixer and using the stereo for playback after the mixer. |

| | | | Thanks for the answers, guys. I am just going to spend the money for a used cheap amp/sub.
Is Guitar Center a good place to get some used starter gear? |

Go with craigslist in your area.
Then you can post here to see if we think it's a good deal.
Remember, we too have our own bents and opinions, but you'll generally get a good collective opinion.
