Korg repair?

Sign in to disble this ad
i *was* very happy today when i picked up a working well Korg px4d used for $75 at my local guitar store.

i decided to take the cheapo batteries out and put 4 freshly charged batteries into it, .....and it smoked

(yes they were the right batteries and good quality, im guessing i should have let the batteries rest for 5 minutes before putting them into the Korg?)

can i get it repaired for less then the cost of another used unit?

What part of it smoked? The only things that look awry in the picture are the electrolytic capacitor close to your thumb, and maybe evidence of smoke close to the upper right hand corner. Did you put in the batt's backwards?

the part on the same side as my thumb but at the other end of the board looks (and smells) burnt to me.

im 99% sure i inserted the batteries correctly, and 99% sure Korg have some kind of built in electronic protection against incorrect battery installation, im guessing the unit just wouldnt power on?

i put the batteries back into it and it didnt turn on but they (the batteries) got very hot in a few minutes,

is this any indication of what is wrong?

Something shorted in the unit (excessive drain will heat up the batteries and could cause an "unexpected thermal event").

I had it happen once that the wires going from a 9-V battery clip got squished under a screw (manufacturing defect, happened when I put the first battery into a cheap alarm clock), and shorted the battery. But like B-String says, it sounds like there's a dead short somewhere. That would be difficult to diagnose and repair, sadly.

Don't bother trying to get it repaired, would probably cost more than the thing is worth. Just take it back and get your money back.
