Kustom Vertical 4x10

Sign in to disble this ad
I think this was intended for use with a p.a. head. Without knowing the interior volume, do you think it could sound worth a flip as a bass cab? Say with today's neos?

Looks like it would make a cool vertical array cab if so.

Durr hurr it's Kustom it won't sound good with anything.

It's probably made for a specific frequency and therefore to be bi-amped with something else. The whole open back thing is kind of iffy imo, but I don't know a whole lot about cab design.

I would try it before replacing speakers. A bad box can only sound so good.

Haha I hear ya.

It is actually a closed back speaker though. The seller took a pic of the inside for the ad.

Those tens are certainly mid-woofers. No way will they reproduce low frequencies and trying to play bass through them will blow them up in a hurry.

But I bet they'd sound great paired with a 1x15 or 2x15 cab. Just make sure you run a high pass on the 4x10 @ about 800 Hz.

Without knowing the interior volume one can't even venture a guess.

If you put basslites in it, it'd probably be a better cab than 95% of the dreck marketed by bass companies in a similar price range.

Some of the basslites are better in sealed cabs than others - look for the one with higher QTS.

That cab used to have a back on it. You can see the frame around the back about an inch or inch and a half in where it screwed on. Measure the dimensions of the box and figure the depth as being from the inside of the baffle to that frame/inset part. It'll still be fairly small and you'll likely be looking for 10's that work in sealed boxes. If there are any ports in the front, plug them.

If you want to mess with it, I'd first cut out a plywood back to screw on it and see how it sounds at low volumes. I wouldn't expect much out of it as far as strong bass at any kind of gig volume with the current speakers but it's possible you could get decent sound with a lot of work. Probably enough work to make you say, to hell with it, get something else but the vertical alignment is going in your favor, as is the aesthetics if you're into that kind of look. Most of the Kustom 215's are sized ok for modern day 212's. You might be able to get a sealed 410 out of it with speakers up around ear level. To me it'd seem like a bit too much work for what you'd end up with but the cool factor of the tuck-n-roll is the deciding value there.

Edit: I can't blow the picture up enough to really tell without getting too grainy but those old square magnet speakers look a lot like old CTS 15's I've seen now and then. The 15's I'm familiar with had good sound at lower volumes but farted out with any kind of appreciable power applied to them. Perhaps with a lower power head and 4 speakers do divide the power between, there might be something there......or not.

Thanks,

That's what I'm thinking-- Does the end justify the means?

I'm a function over form guy, but in this case, the form is pretty cool.

I'd have to be pretty darned sure this would be a go before I dropped ~$400 on some new drivers.

It's a fully functioning closed back cab that's for sale locally. The seller took the back off for the pic.

Thanks!

What's QTS? Recommended container volume?

I'm thinking I'd have about 4' of internal volume to work with.
(4'x1'x1')

In the case of the Basslites (.6'-.8' per driver), I'd be overshooting the recommended sealed cab volume by about 1.2'. How does that affect the sound the cab will produce?

The LEGEND BP102 is the only other speaker they even recommend for sealed enclosure at .5'-1' per driver.

Thanks for any info.

I actualy still have a pair of those in black tuck & roll.
They are decent for a practice PA and have no buisness being used for bass guitar with the stock speakers.
There is not much cabinet volume so doubt that they would work well for bass regardless of the amount of $$ you through at them.
