Lacking Power

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I just picked up two Peavey 410TX 8ohm cabs, and have them hooked in parallel to my (450w into 4 ohm, 250 into 8 ohm) B2re, and I can barely run with my guitarist's half stack. Should I run them in series, does parallel still look like 8ohms to my head? I'm not quite sure how that works. I have my master at 75%, and my gain at 50%, and I'm at the point where I'm starting to lose my tone and get some distortion. Also, I have noticed my low E is much quieter than the higher registers, is this normal? I'm playing a new FSR J Bass. Thanks!

The two cabs in parallel present a 4 Ohm load to the head. The B2re isn't the most powerful head out there but can get the job done as long as you don't boost the low end much, or scoop out your mids. What's your EQ look like?

My lower freq's are just below neutral, my mids are all humped just above neutral, and my highs are just below again. Its a gradual ^. The other thing I noticed is anything around low E or lower gets a little farty, are lows too much for my cabs?

Your EQ setting sounds about right for producing maximum volume potential.
The low notes take the most amount of power to produce, so it's no surprise that they seem quieter, if your amp is straining. See if things even out at lower volumes. If so, you are simply running out of power. How loud are you guys?

We are pretty loud.I have a 2000 watt power amp for big shows, I just figured my 450 would handle small gigs and practice, but I dont want to strain my amp, I hear that tears up speakers.

With your setup, not a chance. See the FAQ section on 'Under/Over Powering.'
Use your big amp. You should be able to get ungodly amounts of volume from those cabs without hurting them. If you hear farting with the big amp, you are straining the speakers- just turn down a bit. But long before that happens you will be very, very loud.
