I have been looking at a LDS 5x8 cab for stand alone situation, and was wondering as to how it would stack up against say a GK MBE410, I mean i don't think it would have as much output but I could be fooled , 8"s seem to kind of punch through very well , also wanted to compare as far as build quality , what do you think.. |

I found one in the classifieds and it is a 5x8 with the coax in the center nice looking cab and he stated it weighs 50 lb , I just don't know it the price is right , he has it at three hundred and seventy five , i don't know if that is a good deal or not , and it is about 110 miles away from me so if I drive there I don't think I would come home without it.also it is tolex covered and has a retro style grill with casters and a cover.

Most of them are more for dedicated midranges or woofers for home stereo or car stuff. Eminences beta8 is sort of a balance between the 2. Low enough fs and enough spl to get you decent volume down to around 100hz when you use 4 (or 8) of them. That's around where many 410's start to losing response. It's also a reason why most SWR Henry 8x8 cabs I come across have blown drivers....guys trying to dial in lows that they're just not capable of reproducing so go easy on the bass knob.
As rp said, LDS's material and build quality will be higher. |

As far as the rest, there are just too many variables in play to yield a conclusive answer. Depends very much on the specific design, specific components, etc.

And my personal preference is also for rear ported cabinets to . to each his own.. i do really like what I have heard about the thunderchild cab though, I would really like to see a 212 4 ohm of this in a vertical array. |

If he can, do a vertical 4x10 @ 4 ohms.
It'll be WAY better than the 5x8 he offers in volume and low end, and dispersion.
Also, for the record, I have never had any issues cutting through with my midrange driver cab. You probably haven't ever played one with a decent crossover or a mid worth a crap.
