Lets talk headphone amps.

So I'm looking at getting some form of setup to practice at home with headphones.

What's the best direction to approach this setup. A.) I need a good get of headphones, and B.) something to power the headphones.

For those with experience, what are good sounding solutions?

Get a VOX amplug. I have the bass version and love it. It's modeled after the AC-100. They even make a small cab you can plug it in to.

I've looked at these, but I'm looking for something with a bit better sound quality.

If you have an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad check out the Amplitube iRig http://www.ikmultimedia.com/irig/features/ . $40 for the interface and the basic version of the software is free, bass amp sim cost like $4. I got one for Xmas and really dig it.

I have the Vox one. If you run a sh*tty bass thru it, it'll sound like crap. But if you run a nice bass with good pickups it'll sound really good. Or decent. With my Ibanez Btb it sounds great. With m BC Rich Warbeast it's kinda meh. But the Rich is for metal so I just turn the gain up and get some distortion going and it's ok.

All in all, I'd buy it again if it broke. I use it a LOT with living in an apartment.

Korg Pandora PX3B or PX4B. I have my PX3B for a few years, and it's always been a great unit. SS, tube, and hi-gain preamp settings, all your standard effects, PCM drum patterns and metronome, aux input for CD/MP3, phrase trainer, chromatic tuner, etc...
Sounds great, and even if you don't use much in the way of effects, the preamps will give you a lot of variety for tone. These things were worth their weight in gold.

+1
Profesional sounding unit.
YouTube phenom MarloweDK used a Korg Pandora for a lot of his vids. His popularity should speak for how well the Korgs sound.

I've had an amp with a headphone out for over 20 years so I just use that.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Cafe Walter HA-1.

I got the Boss TU88 after trying several and I agree with Rob, this is the one to get. Use with some good Shure in ear headphones and your set. Tuner, Metronome, Mix in, 9 volt or wall wart friendly and at half way up on volume is more than enough, kinda lound actually.

I really like the Phil Jones Bass Buddy, a bit expensive but very high quality gear.

Here's another +1 for the Korg Pandora. I use the "4" model and it's my #1 used piece of gear next to the basses.

Wow, how cool is that? My amp has a headphone out, but I'll still probably buy one of these, if only to support this kind of mom 'n' pop operation. Compared to some $40 made in China crap, there's no contest. Thanks for the pointer!
