Level control on my cab...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello fellow tber's. hopefully this will be a quick easy question and hopefully its in the right forum. anyways heres my situation.....i play on an SWR goliath 410 4ohm cab. this cab has a DB level control (pictured below). im just not exactally sure what this thing does and i say this because i dont really hear much of a difference no matter how its adjusted. however this is also at a home volume level...havent messed with it while playin with the band. just wanted to know if anyone has any input on what this actually does...or if i just need to be in a louder (playing with band) situation to actually be able to hear the difference that this level control actually makes.

as usual any and all input/advice is much appreciated

It's an attenuator for the tweeter. Controls the level of the tweeter.

That would be a high frequency horn attenuator. You should not have to turn your amp up loud to hear a difference. If you hear no change then:

a) Your crossover is fried.
b) You are going deaf.

There are probably other possibilities.

i've read conflicting information regarding whether or not it is safe to turn the horn attenuator all the way down on any cab. unfortunately i've not had much luck searching for this since the word "off" gets ignored... anyone have definitive information on whether or not it's safe to turn the tweeter completely off via the attenuator knob on the cab? i play a gk neo 112-ii, but i would think the theory would be the same for any cab...

When you turn the attenuator all the way down (off), the energy that would normally be going to your tweeter is converted into heat, which could possibly damage the crossover. There are many accounts of no damage though, by players who regularly use theirs in the off position.

the heat should stay in the attenuator ... if it wasn't designed to go from 0-10 .. then it wouldn't .. !

or ... if you want it off All the time .. bypass it ...

the worst thing for any speaker cab components is distortion .. the square waves that come from an under powered amp being pushed beyond it's normal useful range ..
