LH500 4 ohm cab suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
I am picking up a LH500 hartke head in the next few days but I can't decide on a 4 ohm cabinet. I use a musicman sterling and I found the hartke cabs to be a bit brite. I have a line on a well priced Epifani UL210 but have never tried one out. Any other suggestions?

Why are you set on a 4 ohm cab? What kind of music will you be playing? A 210 cab will most likely not be enough against two guitarists and a drummer without pa support.

I would always recommend an 8 ohm cab, as you need to actually double your wattage to hear a difference. The difference between the 300 some watts the amp puts out at 8 ohms will be barely noticeable against the power it puts out at 4 ohms.

Somebody please steer me in the right direction if I'm wrong.

I will be playing places like the bitter end and other NYC clubs covering pop, rock, soul, and funk. Haven't owned a bass amp in 10 years as I am mostly a studio guy. I have always been slow when it comes to OHMS and watts. I just need volume. I have to play very lightly ever since I tore my rotator cuff or else my shoulder feels like its on fire. I also can't lug around 2 cabinets for the this reason.

That's understandable, maybe you could look at some neo cabinets? GK makes a really nice 112, 210 cab, both under 50 lbs. Hartke makes a 112 cab as well. Volume mostly comes with more speakers (unless you're working with a very efficient cab). A 210 can only get so loud, no matter what the speakers are rated for.

If you are going to be playing clubs with PA support for bass, I would think that a 210 would do just fine for a stage monitor, but if you have no PA support, I would suggest at least a 4X10 or 2X12 cab. There are many lightweight options.

thanks guys. will check them out although I may snag the epifani for $500 tomorrow. Seems like a good deal. Avatars are priced pretty well. Gonna try to find a NYC dealer tomorrow as well.

If you are looking for a loud light, compact 4 ohm cab - look for a used Schroeder. Very mid voiced but will cut through the mix like a mother.

I really liked the Genz Benz NeoX-212. Sounded great, not too bright for my taste (like the Hartke's can get). If you are set on just one cab and not a pair and your amp is rated at 4ohms, that's the way I'd go.

I have a 500watt 4ohm amp that currently only goes into an 8ohm 2x10 cab rated at 400watts RMS. At 8ohms the amp only pushes 300watts. I sometimes struggle to hear myself over the drums and bassier tones from the rest of the band. I've adjusted by cutting my lows, pushing my low mids, raising the cab off the floor and putting it sideways so the cones are vertically aligned... but for all that work I could have gotten a GB NeoX-212 and been done with the problem.

For light weight portability, value, and power,.....consider this...... just got one (4 ohm) myself to go with a 500watt head

I went to check out the epifani UL2 210 and was completely satisfied. I snagged it. Brand new $500. seemed like a really good deal and I thought it sounded amazing paired with the G&k MB500. I am rethinking my LH500 idea now.
