Light Affordable Gigging Amp!

Sign in to disble this ad

Hey guys,

I'm in need of a relatively light amp or combo for under £600. I'm currently using a seriously heavy Trace Elliot 4x10 combo and although I love the tone its not the most convenient thing to move around. I'd quite like an easier solution for rehearsal and gigs in smaller venues.

I play in a funk band (guitar, bass, drums and vox) and both the drummer and guitarist are reasonably controlled(!) But I'd still like something with enough oomph to ripple the back of my trousers without weighing a ton.

Is there something out there that will do the job without costing a fortune?!

In an ideal world I'd probably buy a Markbass but at the moment the money for one just isn't around.

Do you think I should go the combo route, or head+cab? I like the punch of a 10" but is that crucial?

I don't need much in the way of features, my compression will come from my EBS Multicomp for example, but I would probably like either an input gain control or at least a peak indicator as at times I have had to dial down the level from my pedalboard because I was going in to hot into the Trace.

I'd really appreciate any advice anyone has to give!

Thanks in advance, j

Would a Genz-Benz Neo212 with their 3.0 or 6.0 head be too much? If you could, that rig would kill(especially with the 6.0), and not be heavy(60lbs. total)

They do look awesome! But even the 3.0 with a single 10" is a little out of budget and i'm not sure that would kick out enough for gig volume.

GK MB combo amps are cheap and pretty decent. i'll be honest--i don't think they sound as good as their counterpart head+cab... but they are a good value, that's for sure. they have a 2x10 2x12 version, both of which are gig-worthy and should be well under 600 pounds.

Anything imported will have a duty on it so what's local for you?

How much are the Markbass there? How about one of those Barefaced cabs and maybe a Markbass head?

I can get hold of a little mark 250 for about £349 leaving about £250ish for a cab.

The Barefaced cabs look awesome but even their entry level ones are over £400 (from what I can see).

Does anyone have any suggestions for light(ish) cabs that would be suitable for around £250?

The GKs do look cool as well, i've read alot about them but there's nowhere near me that stocks them so i'd either have to go on a road trip to test one or just take the plunge and just order one

I appreciate the feedback guys

You can get the Ibanez Promethean head for £380. It's 500W versus 250W and I much prefer the vibe control to the Markbass VLE/VPF.
