Light weight cabs...any suggestions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm currently dragging around a big old 15" speaker cabinet, and one of the tiny lightweight GK 200 watt heads.
Any suggestions for a lightweight, decent sounding speaker cabinet that can pair up with the new GK head?
Generally speaking, it would be for medium sized rooms, jazz playing and some musicals throughout the year.

I am currently using an SvT210av (8 Ohms) that is left over from a micro rig that I sold off. This cab is 23 lbs and puts out a good sound. There are others and I'm sure you'll get all kinds of suggestions, however if you can buy one used, you are lucky. New they go for $299 and worth it ImO.....

Barefaced has some very light cabs for sure.

I have LDS 15/6, clocks in at 48 lbs. That's pretty darn light for what it is! Mr. Oatman I'm sure is plenty capable of making a lightweight 12/6.

The EA Wizzy 112 might be a cool thing... super lightweight, and a bit old school sounding, and high SPL and 4ohms, which makes it perfect for that little head. Nice lightweight replacement IMO for a more vintage sounding 15 cab in the lower volume gigging situations you are in.

That Barefaced 115 (the small one way cab) mentioned above is also a good one, and relatively similar in voicing to the Wizzy 12 to my ear. Low Down Sound also makes a similar small 3015HO cab that is wonderful sounding. You will save some money from the Barefaced if you are in the US, but will wait quite a few months and it will be a touch heavier.

The Wizzy12 would still be my recommendation with that head.

I have a Flite 1x15 with a 5" midrange loaded with Kappalite 3015 that weighs about 24 lbs. with the casters.

These are the guys who use graphite instead of wood, yes?

Good recommendation! Are they on the 'spensive side?

It's some sort of composite but I think not graphite.

Here's their bass cab list:

Flite

I bought an empty cabinet way back when Kurt was involved so I don't know much about the current company.

I installed the casters and some acoustic batting when I first got it and I've had several drivers in it over the years, EV Pro15L, JBL, PV Blackwidow, and now a Kappalite 3015.

I've never used the mid driver much at all. Maybe I'll remove it and the casters to save a bit more weight.
