Mind if I throw in the SVT 7 Pro and PF heads in the mix? Didn't think so

Okay, so if you're looking for a small/lightweight amp that's at the opposite end of the tonal spectrum from a G-K 800RB, I would suggest looking at an Acoustic Image Focus. While it's not as "warm & fuzzy" as a 1970s SVT, it definitely has none of that plastic, 2-dimensional clank that the 800RB is notorious for. The AI is a very neutral-sounding head imho, leaning towards "old skool" without being conspicuously "vintage" sounding

...whatever the heck that means.

For an old school tone I look more to the cabs than the amp. My iAMP is considered very "modern sounding" by many, but sounds great through the wizzy speakers.

Doesn't have to be wizzys, but I would use tweeter-less cabs. And, IMHO, in general stay away from 10s. Obviously you can get old school through 10s (Ampeg fridge anyone?), but I think most lightweight 10s are going for a more modern tone.

Again, IMHO, YMMV, warranty void if you read this post.

Markbass TTE500 is the best lightweight head I've ever heard. Simply brilliant and it gets as vintage as you want. Failing that, I'd go foe the Orange Terror Bass 500.

Right-O
Meant to add "fusion" and wondered if it as as close as the 7-Pro or Streamliner

I just sold a Walkabout for wanting more "heft" and power; I may regret this; good thing they are plentiful

Still pretty cool (and weird) that most feel that they can't get "close enough" to send the SVT to extinction

Really? Really? 85 lbs. and only 300 watts?
We put a man on the moon 43 years ago and we can't make a lighter SVT that nails the 3D, wide soundstage, warm, heft just yet...

Genz Benz Streamliner.

You won't need any pedal to warm it up.

Great tube like old school tone.

As I get more time on mine have to agree in a big way. Both the TTE amps should be on the short list here.

Thanks everyone that chimed in! I now have several amps I need to go try out. This will be fun! If anyone has anything different to add to the mix, I'd love to hear about it.

The Monique with a built-in Demeter power amp sounds mighty tempting. Not cheap, but mighty tempting.

GB Streamliner, Ampeg 7pro and Orange TB500 will all get that vintage type tone. The latter two have had some issues. I own the Streamliner 600 and love the tones I can get from this amp. It's also much more versatile than people give it credit for and GB customer service is top notch.
