Lightweight Power Amp Mega-thread

Sign in to disble this ad
The lightweight PA market is expanding and I am interested in what everyone is running.

What are you running?
If anything, What did it replace?
What is it pushing?
How do you like it?

Pics are always a plus.

Went through several lightweight power amps and then got a CA9. I'll never use lightweight power amps again.

I also used a couple of the new lightweight power amps, the Crown Drivcore 1100, and the Carvin 1504L, and a couple of Carvers, back in the day, but went back to a QSC PLX 1202, ( 21 lbs ) mainly for the optional 30 hz filter. I frankly have heard no difference in any power amp I have used in the 1000 to 1500 watt category.

PLX2402 in my "medium" rig, PLX3402 in my "big" rig. For a boat anchor, I still have the old RMX 1850HD that I got when I picked up my Acme Low B-2 cabs.

If I were to do it again, the "medium" rig would have a PLX1804 instead, and I'd be able to put it in a shallower rack.

Running a Crown Drivecore 1500 - it replaced a Fender MB1200 (800watts @ 4ohms) on my gig rig and a yamaha PS2500 practice rig (rated a little less than the crown but doesn't bridge into 4ohms)

I run the Crown Bridged into 4ohms for 1500watts. So far the weight factor is a huge plus for me and the extra headroom is a bonus. I do find I hear slightly less in the deep low end with the lighter crown compared to the fender, but everyone on here seems to think i'm crazy when i say so... YOMV

Besides that it has been a WIN in every aspect for me so far

Getting in on this thread.

Currently running a Crown Drivecore XLS1500, like the above poster.
Just got it though, so not much detail yet. I like it so far. knock on wood.

Also own a plx1804 that I'm probably going to sell because I see no need for 2 poweramps atm, and need the money for other gear, of course.

Well I just took the plunge and bought a used Crown XTI2000 off of ebay for $355.

It is replacing a EP2500 and will be pushing a nEarful 12/6/1 and 12 sub. But until they are finish just my dual 2x10 setup. Haven't got it yet so don't know how I like it.

pre with a Crown XTi 4000

I've read both good and not as good comments on the Crown XTi series on TB. I think that some of those amps did have some issues and I just read on the Crown website of a recall on some of those.

But my XTi seems good. I just started using a Demeter HPB-1 pre into a Crown XTi 4000 on top of my 4 ohm Aggie GS410 for the last 4 or 5 gigs. At Tuesday's rehearsal, and for the first time, I was able to dial in a tone that I loved (we practiced on stage in the club we play on Fridays sometimes). Lots of low end with a nice, clear upper range, and not too much treble - just clear upper notes. I'd love to hear two of those cabs hooked up!
My Warwick Thumb sounds really good through that combination so I'm really looking forward to playing it again at the club on Friday night.

I want to hear more about what power amps TBers are using...

Dave

Within the next two weeks I'll get the Crown XLS Drivecore 1000.
I will use my Line6 Bass Pod Pro as preamp and mesa powerhouse 410 as cab.

I'd supposed it can't be bad ...
