Lining A Speaker Cabinet And Other Improvements

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an eighties Carvin B215M. It has later model Carvin HE15's. It is very punchy and tight with only a Peavey Century 200 head. I get bad distortion if I turn the bass past 12:00. I keep the Middle at maximum. I really dig the sound. It has only a thin piece of fiberglass insulation on the bottom half of the back. What benefit would I gain if I lined all but the baffle? Any other improvements I might make?

lining all the walls but not the baffle is de rigeur for cabinets, helps attenuate standing waves and thus help focus the sound better. A lot of folks here on TB like the waffled foam bed liners about 1.5-2" thick you can get at a bunch of different places cheaply and easily.

I'm wondering how it will sound. It is not boomy at all now. I wonder if frequencies bouncing around inside can cancel out others.

you'll generally notice an improvement. It's an easy and cheap experiment to try, and if you don't like it or notice a difference you can always remove it. But in this day and age I don't know of any reputably built cabinet w/o it.

Check some of the stickies in the AMPS section, no doubt there's some threads in there about the benefits of stuffing/lining cabinets.

That's exactly what happens.

Thank you. As soon as I can I will line it. Not sure which to use: fiberglass insulation, egg crate mattress topper, or poly fill.
