Little Mark Lo-Mid EQ Frequency

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm interested in buying a LM 250. The only thing that worries me is that the lo-mid frequency, 360Hz, seems too high. 200-250Hz would be nice to achieve a thick, punchy tone from Jazz basses.

What are your thoughts?

Depends on the cab, but I find the fixed low mid frequency on the MB heads pretty useless. That's one of the reasons I went from the F1 to the F500. Not sure why they fixed that low mid freq where they did... too low to roll out the nasal mid mids in some cabs like the little Bag Ends, and too high to roll in the low mid punch that some cabs can use, like the AG GS112's or the older Berg HT cabs like the HT322.

Of course, the MB heads with the fixed mid control sound wonderful 'flat' with a wide variety of cabs, but I agree, the low mid EQ center point is a negative. The fixed hi mid voicing at 800 is perfect. However, the bass control is voiced very nicely to roll off deep low end without sucking upper bass/low mids out, so many find that just a slight cut in that deeply voiced bass control serves a similar function as boosting at 100-200hz.

If you don't mind the size, the SA450 (discontinued and replaced with the Momark modulare version, but probably still plenty in the distribution system) is basically an LMIII with semi-parametric mids... very lightweight, and solves that issue. The F500 is a different voice (tighter, punchier) but also has GREAT EQ.

You confirmed my suspicion. Since I couldn't test the LM with my basses at the store, I wasn't sure.

This was the main reason I used a Tone Hammer preamp with my F1 -- it has a sweepable mid-control, and the highs are set a little lower (4 kHz) with a seemingly narrower Q -- and one of the reasons I now have an RH450 with semi-parametric control over all 4 bands.
