I've always been a little bit anal about the way my gear looks on stage. It seems a bit boring to have the exact same gear that everyone else has.

So, here are a few examples of some of the little tricks I've used over the years on my current rigs. Most are achieved by simply painting the speaker board and/or adding a new grille.

What's the process for success? This looks fantastic, I'd love to try it.

Right on! You chose the same color [blue] as I did. I'll post some pics soon! I too think it's boring to have everything black black black...

As long as we're talking about making amps look different, I had a 1977 Fender Bassman come to me with most of the original Tolex torn off.

I got inspired, came across some green Tolex, and here is the result.

Looks great. Black on black is great if your goal is for your gear to disappear. But it is definitely possible to have cabs that look like something without risk that they'll show every single ding and scratch. I just like to leave the baffle boards on the cabs I've built natural, stain and wipe on urethane.

Color-wise.....simply mask or remove the speakers, and paint the mounting board. I try to use a satin finish...I think it looks better not so shiny. Rattle cans or any other paint will work fine as long as the surface is clean. Spraying the tweeter a different color is also an option.

A long time ago I played with a YES tribute band. I removed the grilles, and painted the backboards of a pair of SVT 8x10's that I was using bright white. The band was using black lights at the front of the stage...and under the right lighting conditions, the speakers just seemed to "float"...it was a pretty cool.

Hmm....not sure how far you can go with the cones. I've barely misted old speakers with black before so they look nice again, that worked fine. Partsexpress sells "wet look" stuff you can spray on there to make them shiny but at some point, the coating would add enough mass to the cone to change the parameters and thus the sound. Don't know how much is too much, may try it on some old crappy speaker before doing anything to the good stuff.

Making the cone heavier would lower response but also lose spl and screw with mid response.

DO NOT paint your speaker cone..it will dry it out and you'll hear more farts than a visit to your grandmother's house on Thanksgiving!!

An electronics tech who does re-coning for a living told me to use Armorall or vehicle tire dressing to keep them from drying out...plus they look new again. I've been doing that for years.
