loading amp head (no speaker attached)

I have an Ampeg micro stack. For recording, I'm getting what I feel is a better sound out of the direct output than miking the cabinet.

It's also more convenient in that I can sit in front of my speakers if I unplug the cabinet. I'm wondering though if the amp will overheat and self destruct if it's not loaded down with the speaker.

Do I need to attach a dummy load resistor or anything? What do you guys think?

If its a tube amp, it will need a load. If its solid state, it will be okay without speakers attached.

It's fine without a cab. Done it many times, although I greatly prefer micing it
