Looking to add to my 2x10 for 5-string. another 2x10 or 1x15?

Hey folks.

I just bought a new Fender American Standard P-bass V, so I'm not going to be able to buy a new cab any time soon, but I'm thinking of starting to save up for one to add to my set up.

Right now, I've got an Ashdown EVO II 500 with a matching 2x10 cab (both are the older, UK-built versions), through which I play a Lakland 55-02, a Godin A5, and now the Fender.

I was thinking of adding another cab to the mix. Logic (and the opinions of *some* guys I've spoken to) dictates a 1x15 to make my B-string jump out better, but there's a guy who plays the same circuit as me who uses 5-strings and rocks tywo 2x10 cabs. He says there's something in the way the two cabs work together that makes the B-string just sing.

What do most of the 5ver players here think?

there is nothing that makes a 15 inherently better than 10's at producing low end. IMO go with another 2x10. but if you can, try both before buying.

Some 10s go deep, others do not. Some 15s go deep, others do not. It all depends on the speaker and the box in question.

Chances are you will be happier with a 2x10 that is identical to the one you already have, assuming it goes sufficiently low enough. If it isn't a particularly deep-sounding 2x10, then you could try Ashdown's matching ABM 1x15, as companies typically build these cabs to "mate" well with one another. If you trying to use another company's cab, whether it's a 2x10 or 1x15, you are rolling the dice. It might work great, or might not work well at all, but there isn't a way to know that in advance. Could be a lengthy and frustrating trial & error process.

I have an ABM500EVOII mated to an ABM115 and ABM210 - all UK-built stuff from about 5 years ago. What I've found is when played together as a stack regardless of the volume or the room, the sound delivered 30'-50' out from the rig is MUCH fatter compared to playing just the 2x10.

I've also had the opportunity to A/B the same stack against a pair of ABM210T's and the Ashdown Blue-Line 10's just don't carry the lows the way the 15 does.

Just my opinion - YMMV.

Lots to think about. Once I actually have money again, part of me would jump at either one if a UK-built one came by second-hand. I'm going to see about A/B-ing a few.

Double Agent, I'm definitely not looking to mix brands. Hell, I think I'd even try to stay within the same model line, hence the second-hand interest.

Anyway, I can't buy anything at the moment. I just like to have something specific to save for. But I'll try to play through both sometime over the next little while. I'll let you know what I discover.
