I'm looking for a fairly quiet cab. I want a nice clean and clear sound but I don't need much volume. The most I'd have to compete with is a drum kit with foam pads on all of the drums.
This cab would (most likely) not ever be used for gigging, just for home practice and band rehearsal (that's when I'd be competing with the padded drums)
What do you think?

I think you would do well with a single 12, it tends to cover most of these scenarios pretty well at a varying range of prices.

Right now I have an active 5 string bass. I eventually plan on getting a 4 string active bass and/or a 4 string passive bass.
Edit: As far as budget, preferably something under $300. Definitely under $400.

For smaller/quite gigs I use one of my two Epifany NYC 2x10s - it is great - gets as loud as you like (within reason) and supports a B string no problem. I've also played through (and quite liked) the Bergantino 2x10... But these might be out of your budget if you're running a Berhinger amp. If that's the case, look at a used SWR 4x10. They can be had fairly cheaply - no they aren't as nice as an Epi or Berg, but they are good and do the job well.

Here's the thing: Small, high quality cabs aren't cheap. Epis/Bergs are out of your range. You could get an SWR 2x10, but I think you'll be disappointed. I had one - okay cab, but could NOT handle a 5 string

I've been considering a floor monitor, such as a yamaha club series. I'd just cut the lowest frequencies on the send going to it.

Or...
Watch the T.B. classifieds for a used Avatar 210 Neo cab.
That'd be an even better bargain.
I gig with two Avatar Neo 210 cabinets, LOVE em'. |

But I'd rather find the right cab first and then pick a power amp based on what cab I have rather than the other way around.

| | | | if you still need to get a cab and power amp, and wont need huge power, why not just get a combo? id suggest a GK MB115. Light weight, good power, a 15" for the lows. $400new. Not much room to grow however. If you ever think you might need more juice, then id look at the MB210 which can add a second cab, but may not handle a low B too well stand alone. |

I think it seems a bit puzzling that you have enough insight to know that you want to run a modeling preamp and separate power amp, but have absolutely no idea what cabinet you want to run.
I have to wonder how clear of an understanding you have of what's in front of you. Questioning whether a 410 cabinet wouldn't be "too loud" definitely adds to my concern.
You seem to start off with fairly basic needs, and basic needs can be addressed by basic solutions. I'd think basic solutions here would be a head (amp) and cabinet or a combo unit.
Since your only stated goal is being loud enough to play with padded drums, you start with your options are wide open (I don't consider wanting it to sound good a goal, since I don't expect anyone to really be looking for a cabinet that doesn't sound good).
With your only constraint parameter for the cabinet being price, you essentially have the whole universe of cabinets under $400 open to you.
Popular opinion is tending toward the suggestion that a 2x10 or 1x12 configuration would be your minimum. So really, any 2x10, 1x12, 1x15, 2x12, 4x10, 6x10, 8x10, 2x15, 1x18 (or other conceivable > 1x12 or 2x10 config) that's under $400 could be in the running. Including new and used options, the list is probably almost endless.
So, other than staying under $400, what are you trying to do?
Does the weight/size matter? Are you moving it from home to rehearsal twice a week or is it going to mostly stay put (I don't know that home and rehearsal aren't the same place)? Do you have a really small car?
Do you have a strong preference between new and used? For buying locally or online? Is there a limited market nearby?
And btw, I don't know how you got too far into looking at Acme, their 2x10 is $600.

Not a bad place for gear -- you have used options like crazy. Look on craigslist. I just took a glance and just in the last day, there are Hartke and Peavey 4x10 cabinets for $150 and $175.
