Looking to change from Markbass LMII any advice?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey folks,
I have been using a Markbass LMII through a Epi UL410 series II for the last year and a half....I like the LM II, but I guess its a little too warm at times, if that makes any sense. I do like a "modern" sound with the ability to adjust to warmth instead of the other way around. Any advice as to where to go from here? Looking to spend between $650 and $900. Thanks.

I play in a blues band that has a rock edge to it that plays some R&B and funk as well as some swing stuff. I have to be able to cut through the keyboards and guitar.

I went from an SVT to LMII; maybe the other direction for you?
No problem with cut through with an SVT assuming you still feel like playing after huming it from the house to the gig.

My Little Mark II is the best amp decision I've ever made in my bass playing life. I like fat and warm.....
Try any Genz Benz stuff or GK, their Fusion 550 is supposed to be stellar. Also, I have the same Epifani cab and it's a very bottom heavy and warm cab tonewise...try pushing the tweeter level up, to.

Keep the LMII and add a pedal or two to dirty up the sound to get what you want.

What about the FI or a different Markbass head?

What pedals? Maybe a Sansamp?

I still love my LMII, but especially with the 410UL, I moved to the F1 a couple of years ago, and finally to the F500 for the exact reason you mention..... the F1/F500 is more inherently punchy, louder, tighter, while still being in that same general tone family (i.e., clean and accurate).

I LOVE the F500 with my 4ohm 410UL, since I can dial that lo mid center point down a bit to add some 'burp' to my tone (as you know, the 410UL can get a bit 'wide and mushy' in some rooms). With the F500, you also get a more fully featured DI and a mute switch, more volume, and you actually cut the size and weight.

Highly recommended with that cab. The only downside (IMO) is that the concentric knobs are difficult to adjust on a dark stage on the fly, but it sounds like you are similar to me... run the head relatively flat, make some slight adjustments for the room acoustics, and then play!

How about just turning the bass control down?

That's another good suggestion My buddy TBer 'Vision' uses an LMII/410UL, and I believe the only EQ he uses is to dial down the bass control a bit. With his strong technique and his jazz bass, it growls and punches. Not quite as bright and punchy as the F1/f500, but surely 'close enough'. I would still be very happy using my LMII with the 410UL... the F500 just puts a little more 'punch and burp' into the tone, and grinds just a touch more up top, which I like.

I dig what you guys are saying ...and I have turned the bass down..a bit...with decent results...I was thinking that I might get the F500 and have the LMII for a back up.
Thanks for all the input!!!

I just brought home a Series II UL-2 (4ohm 410) tonight and paired it up with my LMIII. I was not too sure i was going to keep the LMIII but it feels like it was made for this cab. Sounds incredible!

+ 1 on the F1 (vs LMII)

It is very much Markbass family, but still different. I like both, and own both.

I have the F1 also and like it way more than the LMll. You could aslo look at the new Carvin BX1500 head. Lotta tone options there, and just under $600.
