Looking to change from my GK Neo cabs...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Neo 212 and 410 and I know the GK Neo's get much love on here but they're just not doing it for me. I find them to be too bright for my liking so I'm looking to move onto something with a fatter low end. I'm hoping to maybe do a trade in a local music store, but I also have the option of selling on the used market. If I do go that route then obviously I'll have cash to shop around. So this is where my lovely fellow TB folk come in any suggestions for cabs with a fat low end?

What amp are you running with those cabs?

I have a few different heads so it depends on the occasion. I've got a Mesa BB750, GK 700RBII and Orange Terror Bass.

The 410 or 212 alone is too bright? I've never used them, only a test drive on a 410 but it seemed ~full. Maybe the combination of cabs is hurting the bottom and middle?

I run a GK 700rb II with a GK 2-12 NEO and I get a really full lowend out of it.

Captain obvious here: Did you turn down the tweeters?

The consensus on TB is that G-K amps deliver a big bottom.

Perhaps trying more EQ adjustments would help what could be just a case of G.A.S.

Have you tried your bass through different amps to ascertain whether or not its setup is a factor?

An Orange OBC115 may be what you're looking for. Great cab for a good, powerful vintage bass tone.

Yep I always have the tweeter's turned down fully. And I've run my basses through many amps over the years and was never this picky with my tone until I had these cabs.

Then perhaps you're a 15" cab fancier at heart?

Fingers & flats? What kind of bass?

I use a Warwick $$ and a Spector Euro LX. I mix it up between fingers and pick pending on the style of band I play with. The store I'm considering trading these cabs into has some Orange cabs so I might try them out and see what they're like. Think they only have the isobaric 212 and 410 though. They also have a pair of Genz Benz 410T XB2's that I might give a whirl. Anyone had any experience with those?

Use the knobs on your amp to make the brightness go away.

I've tried so many settings at this stage, with all 3 of my amp heads I might add, and if it isn't working with these cabs by now then they simply aren't pleasing to my ear, that's what it comes down to.

What cabs did you run before you got the GK? Were you happy with those cabs? What prompted you to switch?

Go with the Berg NV's, or the Orange OBC 115.

What heads are you using?

I think you want an Ampeg 410HLF...

@Wes: My heads were posted earlier near the start. I'd love to try out an Ampeg 410HLF but there's no dealers near me.

@Slowgypsy: I've had a Warwick 411 Pro, Peavey 410 TX and then an Ampeg 810. I decided to move on from the 810 to having 2 cabs instead for more flexibility, being able to bring one cab to smaller venues then 2 for the bigger ones etc.

If you liked the sound of the Ampeg 810, you'll love the Bergantino NV series.

I must look into the Bergantino NV series. I bet they're going to cost me a lot more than what I'd get for selling the 2 GK Neo cabs.

Do you add a lot of treble boost with either of your bass' onboard preamps?

I've come across a Mesa Powerhouse 1000 on the used market locally, if I sold my GK cabs I'd have plenty of cash for it. Anyone had much experience with the Powerhouse 1000? It looks very interesting. How's the low end out of it?
