Isn't every aging bass player? Any recommendations out there? I'm talking less than 40 lbs.

There may be a few options near your mark, but honestly you may have to compromise on the all-tube aspect. For example you can get a really tubey-sounding tube preamp and an ultralight ss power amp, or a ss preamp that emulates the SVT or B15 sound, etc.

I'm not sure you will be successful finding an all-tube amp that weighs under 40 pounds.

Check out the Traynor YBA-300.

It will be interesting to see what other TB'ers post in this thread. Any amp using traditional iron transformers will be over your weight criterion. It would have to be an amp that uses toroidal transformers such as the Traynor.

You might also want to post how much amp power you are looking for.

Wow. I didn't know the 400+ only weighs 47 pounds. That's pretty cool.

the only one that i can think of that's around 40lbs is the Peavey VB3 (@37lbs and 300 watts!). even my old ampeg V4B weighs around 65lbs and they're only 100 watts. also the 200 watt traynor YBA-200 is 42.3lbs and their yba-300 is 51lbs.

Try an Ampeg SVT 3 PRO.. it's 475 watts at 4 ohms, and isn't very heavy at all, definitely less than 30 pounds.. sounds great. Nice and warm..

Good one, JK. I had forgotten about the Peavey VB3. That is the lightest all-tube 300 watt amp I have ever heard of. It's the switching power supply that makes it possible.

A lightweight tube amp? Such a mythical beast has eluded bassists for centuries. Legends have been passed down through the ages from father to son of their existence but, to this day, no mortal has beheld such a creature.

I believe the OP is seeking an all-tube amp.

Orange AD200 is 55 pounds - not too far off in practical terms. Great amp.

Peavey VB-3 is only 37 pounds. 300 watts, and all tube.

Lots of people seem unaware that it exists.

My FAD Four is 38,5 IBS...

It's only 100 watt though... Great amp, though. I've sold all my other amps and kept this one.

The older MESA/Boogie Bass 400 (non-plus) had 6 6550 power tubes and only weighed 35 lbs. Great head, but when I started to try to make it sound like an ampeg, I knew that it was time to get one. All the best, Cheers.
