Hi -
So I think I'm slowly starting to look into getting a new head, and I'm looking for something that will get me some natural grit/drive. Currently I'm running an 800rb with a VT bass into a mesa diesel 2x15 loaded with 3015's. To me it sounds...just ok, pretty good but not awesome. I've tried several dirt pedals as well, but they all lacked a certain "organic" feel that I hear in clips of tube amps. I've looked around here (I feel like I should spend less time here and more time playing!), and I'm thinking for my needs either looking into an Orange Bass Terror (not all tube, I know) or an Ampeg V4b or V4bh. I'm definitely not looking for a clean tone, and I don't think the 100 watts that the V4b has would be a limiting factor.
I've looked all over, but I haven't found any clips of a "gritty" V4b. Could anyone point me in that direction? Any opinions on my quest? I don't have the option of playing either a the moment. And for what it's worth, I like to play rock music w/ a pick.
thanks - hope this wasn't too redundant of an inquiry! |

If you have more cash, an AD200b MK3. Beautiful amp with the nicest gain ive heard It has a wonderful fat clean as well. Sounds massive.

It's a bit big for a pedal, but it's a full-fledged bass preamp, and it'll drive a poweramp if you want it. But it's best weapon is the natural sounding tube grit- pure bliss. Alot cheaper than a new amp.

I'm also looking for a new head with a gritty tone like the OP.
I see that the Bugera 1960 is a guitar amp so I'm wondering if it sounds decent with a bass.

Tom - the videos you posted of the tube amps were awesome, btw. I was surprised how similar the Bass Terror and the AD200B sounded.
The valvedrive is intriguing, as is the new Tech 21 oxford pedal, however I'm in the mode that I would like to have my amp provide me with the tone I'm looking for. Trying the "less is more" approach I guess. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
