| | | Looking for a new cab. Specifically SWR's

I currently have a Peavy 4x12 cab and I'm loving it, but it's a little old and worn out. Plus I want to experiment with a new and maybe better sound.
I was looking at the SWR amps and the Big Bertha really caught my attention. I play in a metal band and tune to drop C. I love the low end bass sound, that's why I'm digging the Big Bertha's 1x18 speaker.
Though I do play a lot of the high and mid range notes too, so I was thinking of adding a 4x10 Goliath III or IV (I don't know the difference).
Can anyone give some insight on this? Would the 1x18 and 4x10 cabs sound good together? Would a 1x15 be more suitable for drop C tuning? And whats the difference between the Goliath III and Goliath IV? |

And if they would sound good togather depends on your amp and the ohm rating it can handle and ohm rating of the 2 cabs combined. But I love my swr goliath sr.

For example- sure, a Goliath & Son of Bertha will work, but having matched speakers(i.e. a pair of SOB's or a pair of Goliaths) might work clearly better to your ears.
What do you mean by playing "high & midrange notes"?
I would think that your Peavey 4x12" would be ideal for your playing situation. |

But if you plan to use your existing 4x10 and want more speakers I’d get another matching 4x10 and stack them. For bass guitar cabinets personally I like 15s best - more than 10s, 12s, or 18s. |

For bass, I have never used smaller than 12" except for cans! I cannot vouch for 10" bass speakers but in 50 years technology has moved on so I accept the fact that they should be fine. I have 4 x 15" Altecs in my Tonehenge stereo rig I built for the Rickenbacker Stereo Bass in 1973-4. It still works well and has been used as a P.A. too.
I can't really remember the 18" speaker rig but it would only be suitable for bass and low end keyboards. Use other speakers in addition but check on the impedance so you get the maximum benefit of the combination.
Tonehenge is on my Home Page www.escutcheonmedia.com

And Alan, I was saying that I want that low end, booming, wall shaking sound when I play the bottom C note. But I play on all of the stings and I when I'm on the high C and F string (high and mid range notes) I wanted those to kinda sound a little punchy.
So I was thinking that the big 1x18 speaker could give that low end sound and the 4x10 could produce somewhat of a punchy sound. But I'll just have to test it out. |

It's freaking awesome!!! It's crazy loud, yet crisp and articulate. Very boomy. When I crank it up, crap falls from the ceiling. No exaggeration. Sold my Ampeg rig and bought this setup. My rig is set for a long, long time.

All my cabs are 8 ohm. I could be wrong, but I think the Goliath 4 is made in Mexico. My 3 is older and made in the US. |
