Looking for a new combo

Sign in to disble this ad
So here is some things I'm looking for in the combo:
Tubes in the head (no solid state.)
Either a 1x15 or 2x10 cab
Something very portable....
And most importantly, something with great tone.
Suggestions??
Thanks!

How much power do you need and why a tube in the preamp?

The only combo's that come to mind that'd fit your criteria are the SWR Redhead or Eden Metro

Both 2x10 configurations and both very loud...but I wouldn't call them portable

Seems that ALOT of people are loving the new Genz Benz Shuttle 6.2 combo and I'm sure that running that with their matched 2x10 would work well...you could add a preamp pedal for simulated tubey goodness

Good luck

I prefer the sound of tubes.. As for powe,r anything over 300w would probably do the trick.

Pure tube-head and portable does not really match, they tend to be heavy. You could also just get a tube pre-amp solid state head. Markbass and others make those.

Well, I've been away from playing for about 10 years and I'm not up on the latest greatest stuff, but as an ex owner of the SWR Redhead and current owner of an Eden Metro (both 2x10 and both discontinued) I can say that either would work for you.

But in the limited amount of Internet surfing I did today, I don't believe that what you're looking for is currently available...

Seems that the trend is going towards micro heads and lightweight cabs which you should consider...IMHO/IME, if I had to do it again, that's the route I'd go...

Lightweight 300 watt all tube combo? You're dreaming. Do you mean hybrid? Mesa Walkabout Scout 12 would do the trick, for around $1400, but it's a hybrid.

I thought he meant tubes in the preamp...

All tube doesn't exist

I've heard that Walkabout combo's are real nice...just never tried one

All tubes means huge transformers. A combo? I'm not seeing it.

But, there are many lightweight amps with one or more 12AX7's (or AU7's, or the like) in the preamp section. Have a look

I've got a SWR Redhead and love it. 210, Tube pre-amp, 400 watts, 650 with ext cab. I play in a cover band with 2 guitarist (both using 50 watt tube PRS combos) and I am plenty loud enough. I also played a markbass 210 combo at guitar center 2 weeks ago and loved it just as much, and it's smaller and lighter!

300 watt tube amp in a combo... That's like asking for an SVT in a combo. Asking for that in a portable format is just being greedy haha.

+1 The power supply and output xformers alone would weigh close to 40 pounds!

Fortunately we bass players are not so tube-only centric like the guitar players.

The OP would need 3 of these to meet his power needs.

It's only $4000 but I'll bet you'd complain about that, too.
