Looking for a new Combo or Rig

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently had the GKMB212 had to get rid of it and no im not bashing GK they have been great with replacements and shipping back. I will say that 500 watts in a 37 lb package sounds to good to be true, and i learned after my 3rd one it is. Now I'm willing to spend 600$ on a new combo or rig, I have massive PA support, with a powered 18 inch mackie, give me your thoughts on what i should get, I'm in a working Cover band we platy out 3 to 4 times a month, I have an old faithful Ampeg b100r, that amp has stood the test of time, awesome, I do need something a little more powerful, I also play a 5 string 2010 Jazz bass...

So what about the MB212 didnt work so we can help with suggestions?

I also play in a cover band and have K12s as mains for PA support and I have the MB210 and its never been up past half volume for any gig.

If you have massive PA support, you should only need an amp for stage volume.

If volume was an issue, you might want to start looking into a preamp/power amp/ cab rack setup over a combo.

Try this.... for a few extra bucks you'll have a great sound and a reliable rig.

Actually the GKMB 212 combo, sounds amazing when new, but over a few shows, the speaker begins to pop really to the point of unplayable, it has happened to 2 of mine so far, I also read on GCs on-line site the same thing happened twice to someone else. Very dissapointed as I really wished i could keep it, it is my first time I went with a GK and they have been great with the return paid shipping and warranty, I always had ampeg but I heard their new combos are bad news as well. I really like combo amps for some reason, but I always wanted one with power in case I needed it. I'm thinking about the new Peavy TKO but knowbody knows much about them. If I coulc afford it I would buy the Mesa boogie combo stuff but they seem pricy, and considering I just bought a new Fender Jazz 5 I need to relax with spending that much on a new combo. That being said my ampeg b100r is still kicking I love that amp and if I could buy a brand new I probably would except they dont make them anymore.

hmm...

seems like you were pushing alot more lows into the combo and also further in volume than it could handle to achieve the sounds you got w/ your old setup.

seems like you just need more speakers and power.

Traynor and Yorkville (same company) make a great combo bass rig in 200 and 400watt configuration. Two 10s or a single 15", each with a tweeter, give you some flexibility, based on what you can afford. A new Traynor DB (DynaBass) 400 watt combo will cost you about a grand. A used Yorkville XM200 (200watt w/tweeter) can be found for $200 or so. These brands are probably the most underrated bass rigs in their price range of any amps out there. And they are built like a tank.

I'm now playing a Traynor DynaBass 300T - 225 watts into the internal 2 x 8'' plus tweeter 8ohm cabinet, and 350 watts when you add an external 8ohm speaker cab.

Love it, love it, love it. I'm doing a large room (400 - 500 people) tonight with PA support and I'm going to rent the TC115NEO (400watt, 8ohm 1 x 15") extention cab to beef it up and have some fun with.

Really looking forward to it and when you look at the weight specs (45lbs for the combo and 39.2lbs for the 1x15 extention cab), I'm going to love the load in & out.
