Looking for THE overdrive sound

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there,

I'm new in this forum so i thought it would be polite to introduce myself . I'm a guy from Belguim living here my whole life and i love bass and everything that comes with it :amplifiers, cabs, effects pedals etc..

So that's basicly it!

Allright !! Here is my question: Are there people here who play overdriven sounds on there bassrigs, i mean i am looking so hard to get a cool overdriven sounds but i did'nt succeed so for to get it . The sound that i'm looking for to create is almost the same sound Jesse F Keeler usses In Death From Above 1979. I think it's a vintage Peavey F800B Head. And as i have been told that specific sounds could only be created by an ampifiers who has an overdrive button on the control panel.

Has anyone ever explored this way of playing???

Greetz Tim

there may have been a time that was true but it's not anymore. you can get bass overdrives now that are very specific. the overdrive that the death from above guy uses comes from old traynor amps, i believe, and there's a pedal called the tronographic rusty box that cops that tone. the good thing about pedals is you can cop those tones at volumes that won't get you fired from a small club gig. anyway, there's tons of stuff out there and you just have to find what works for you.

A LOT of Jesse's OD sound is from the Ric he was playing too... He did some electronic kung fu on it that made it have almost no resistance, so the thing was running crazy high output.

I also love DFA1979 and i love Jesse's tone. I've ALWAYS been a fan of old solid state amps. I get a crazy grind with my Kustom200, Peavey Mark VI and GK 400rb... Picking two and going through a 6x10 and 2x15. It helps to have a super high output bass (i can crank my ATK nicely!)

On the cheap, i would recommend running the Digitech Bad Monkey OD pedal... that pedal alone is almost an instant Jesse Keeler tone...

Here's an interview with him:

There are music videos with him playing a Gibson Grabber as well... but i've never seen any live video of them.

Good Luck!

I´ve had some cool results with an Ibanez Tubescreamer for an awesome overdriven tone on a SS amp, or by just DI´ing it after the Tubescreamer

Jesse used Acoustic 450 amps with old Traynor 810 cabs with a Ric. I have that same setup. The Acoustic was an all purpose amp with built in distortion. He runs it on the bright setting and the lead setting while boosting some of the low end. He also has a Peavey F-800 head but is more associated with the Acoustic.

Thx , The thing is, around here in Belguim the guitar shops don't have many footpedals so if you want to try one out, you just have to buy it or try a friends one But thank's for the info , now i know at least what direction to folow . And i've found a few on ebay for like 40Usd , i'm gonna give that a try

Ps here is a link to a live gig they played in Amsterdam 5 years ago or so http://death-from-above-1979.blogspo...so-on-fab.html

Thx again
