Looking for Practice amp

Sign in to disble this ad
After decades off, I've decided to take up playing again and I'm looking for a good practice amp. I'm considering a Carvin bass and was looking for a clean amp to practice with.

I was thinking Genz-Benz, but read that Genz-Benz shuttle was going to be discontinued.

Anyone know the story on that or have suggestions on an amp under $700?

Are you talking about solo practice or practice with a small group? There are many amps that sound good if not pushed for well below $700.

Gallien Krueger MB series combos are worth a look IMO.

Solo practice with a future option for small group. I'm not looking to play stadiums, just loud enough to keep the pictures on the walls.

I like the line out option with GB and the multi-EQ, but have not heard one in the Charlotte area.

Also, I was considering getting a 5 string, so I didn't know if a single 10" could handle it or it requires a 12 or 15".

Personally, I'd be more comfortable with a 12 or 15. 2x12 would be nice though. Don't forget to check Carvin as their amps sound good, but I do not have any experience with the smaller combos.

With $700, I'd gun for head/cab options.

Ampeg's Micro-VR/210AV or PF-350/PF115 fits the bill nicely. Portable and sounds great, imo.

Try looking for used gear on TB's Classifieds and your local used market.

I'd personally buy at least 112/115/210 cabs if I absolutely have to get it small and light.

Buy used and get something nice for less than 7 beans.. I personally like anythig GB. Go for 200+watts, and a 12 or more.

I'd personally opt for the Ampeg MicroVR/210AV if you want more of a classic Ampeg tone. If you're one for modern, Genz Benz 3.0 10T combo or the 6.0 12T if you've got the cash to spend! The little 3.0 10T is exceptional for its size and form factor, along with the VR stack. Both of those options leave room to run with a larger or extension cab!

I would also consider a used Eden Metro- 2x10 combo amp. They can be found around 7 bills.

Carvin amps go well with Carvin basses.
