Hey all. I'm looking for a small combo, basically as an easily transportable practice rig. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the Orange Crush PiX CR50BXT 50W 1x12 Bass Combo Amp versus the Ampeg BP112. I want to stay under 300 dollars and stay with a 12 inch driver for size and weight. I've played the Ampeg and really liked it, but don't have anyone local that carries the Orange.

With a $300 budget, if you go used, there are a ton of options. I like older Peaveys for the value, but they tend to be on the large side. |

They are both going to get the job done if you want a practice amp than could handle a few jams. Personally I like that the Ampeg tilts back. |

The Orange and Ampeg are both 50 Watts. I wanted to avoid falling into the trap of bumping up the wattage. This will strictly be for practice and the occasional acoustic gig. If I need more volume, I'll just use my regular rig.

I'll have to check that out.

| | | | I played an orange the other day and loved it as a practice amp. If I were in the market that is what I would go for. Both of them are good, but I always recommend playing something before you buy it. So if you can't find an orange to test out for yourself I'd go with the ampeg. I used to live in raleigh north carolina, and couldn't find anyone that carried orange, and the only dealers I could find didn't carry the bass amps, just guitar stuff so I was always skeptical to buy their bass stuff without playing it for myself. Now I live in atlanta, right down the road from their US distribution headquarters, so it's much easier to find them to test out down here!
So my advice, go with what you can test out and you know you like. Unless you find a used orange crush, and can flip it for what you pay in case you don't end up liking it.

Also, I'd be interested in the overall construction and feel.

| | Supporting Member | | Join Date: Nov 2010 Location: Athens, GA | | | I picked up an Orange Crush 20 with 8" speaker. It is very light and portable and is very solidly contructed, but was very trebley and just too small for me. I sent it to live somewhere else. I'm imagining I'd like 50 watts into a 12 if construction is similar, though. I have the Ampeg BA115 and with 100 watts into a 15 w/tweeter you can use this one for small gigs. I too like the tilt back cab. I bought the BA115 because I liked it better than the BA112 when I played them both. In fact I just picked up another one used locally for $125 for my friend (the handle was broken). If you really want to limit size then the BA112 may be just the ticket. I never really liked the color orange.
Another little amp that looks intriguing in this category is the SWR LA-12. The Fender Rumble is very unimpressive. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
