Loud Bangs and Rumbles on a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0, Anyone else had this problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've had my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 12T Cab, plus Genz Benz 2x10 matching cab, for just under a year,
and I'm very pleased with it, it's lightweight and great sounding.

But over the last couple of months I've noticed loud bangs and some rumbles every 5 or 10 minutes or so.
Today, I spent some time with various basses plugged in, to see whether it was my regular bass that was causing the problem.

I use a Ibanez SR500 for rehearsals and gigging, which is when it comes to my attention, because I use a small
Roland cube at home with no problems at all

Here's what I found:

Ibanez SR500 - Regular banging and rumbles.
Warwick Corvette Ash - Regular banging and rumbles, although not quite so bad.
Warwick Corvette Bubinga - No problems at all.
Home-made Jazz Fretless - One very loud bang, so unplugged immediately.

The three basses that caused problems are all ACTIVE.
The Warwick Corvette Bubinga is PASSIVE.

I'm no engineer, but it seems that the Genz Benz is struggling with the active basses, and I'm going to try my Musicman Sterling (ACTIVE) tomorrow, and if the bangs and rumbles are there too, then obviously, the amp doesn't like active basses.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with the Genz Benz, or any other amp for that matter, and what is the solution?

Any help would be much appreciated.

To me, it sounds like the preamp tube could be going microphonic. Replace it and see what happens. Or PM TB member Agedhorse; he's a GB engineer.

+1

I'm no engineer, but I had a Shuttle 6 for over a year, and I played only Active (EBMM) basses with no such problem. Contact GB tech support to be sure, before jumping to any conclusions.

Where do you have your controls set?

Does the noise occur while playing or just when you have the bass plugged in?

Do you see any LEDs flash in conjunction with the noise?

Have you tried a new instrument cable?

Stop plugging your drummer into it.
