Low Down Sound 1x12

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TBers,

Does anyone here have experience with Low Down Sound's (LDS) 1x12 cabinets?

I'm interested mostly in how it sounds compared to other popular (and often discussed) 1x12s, but also in his customer service and quality.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to downsize my rig to something more portable and the research involved has turned out to be monumental. I have quite a bit of catching up to do as an awful lot of cool stuff has hit the market since I bought my last rig 15 years ago!

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything in a search on his cabinets.

Thanks!
E

I owned one of Don's 12/6 cabs, beautifully made and one of the best sounding cabs I have ever owned. I sold it to another TBer and I believe he is equally happy. TBer Deb is/was selling a mirror image of my 12/6 (mine was actually modeled after his) except his has a black cloth grill. Sorry I don't have a solo pic of my 12/6 but here it is:

I can only add that Don does excellent work, no matter what size cab you want, but be prepared to wait a bit for it to get built. I had him build me 3 different cabs, and each one was excellent. Right now I'm using a LDS 212/horn cab, loaded with Eminence 3012HO's and an 18 Sound XD125 horn. If you are just looking for a 112 cab, he can build you anything you want, but the 12/6 configs with the 3012LF and 18 Sound mid are very popular, and loud as hell.

+1. My 12/6 took approx five months to build, that was last year. My 12/6 had the 3012LF and Faital mid, like Deb's. A bit smoother top end but as loud as I needed it to be.

Thanks for the great replies.

Heck, it could take me 5 months just to get through those LDS threads!

I have a lot of research to do in the hunt for my "perfect" 112, but these raves will place LDS firmly on the list.

The Thunderchild is how I'd roll. No question.

I had LDS build me a 112 (actually 2) with 3012(nonLF) drivers and I did not care for the tone at all. Could be my personal taste or just my ears, but it sounded off to me.

I also like the 12/6 or Thunderchild options.

Is Duke still making the Thunderchilds?

Other than it being almost half the size, , what's the difference ? I would be afraid I would'nt be able to hear myself as well because it's so far away from the ears.

I recall you had some problems with those cabs? My 212, 3012HO cab with horn ( XD125 ) has a very sweet tone, and, contrary to popular belief, can get low enough for a passive 4 string. Really enjoying it in my 7 piece wedding/private party band.

The one Don built for :B: was a pathetic retrofit of a Deltalite 2512 cab without enough port area, because :B: didn't know better than to trust Don to put enough port area on the box

Something like two 3" ports - half the area needed.

Yes, it was two 3" ports. I measured.

I have never built a cab before so I claim innocence

Beautifully built cabs though.

I did a brief writeup on the TC12 versus the LDS 12/6 in the Thunderchild thread after I got the TC12. Basically, they were extremely close in sound and volume with the 12/6 sounding just a bit fuller down low, though the TC12 goes just as low.

It came down to the TC12 having the same tone quality and volume in a smaller, lighter package. Of course this is all IMHO.
