Low Down Sound cab decision help

Sign in to disble this ad
my LDS is going into construction (hopefully) soon, and I am trying to decide whether I want a 6.5" midrange driver to take care of the highs, or a 6.5" midrange driver + tweeter. I'll describe my setup, and what I want.

cab plans/heads/bass:
first off, I bi-amp. I have two output on my bass, and each pickup goes to a separate amp which goes to a separate cab. this was I can separate the frequencies and get all the high end and mids to cut through without sacrificing any low end. as far as the heads, for the "treble" side, I use a Peavey Valveking 100. the "bass" side, I use an SWR Workingman's 4004. as far as my cab, it's essentially going to be two separate cabs in one enclosure. it will be internally separated by a piece of birch (or something) and will have separate inputs for each half of the cab. the bottom half will be ported and have long throw 12's that will reach down to high 20hz. the top half of the cab will be sealed and have two 10's with a 6.5" midrange driver that will reach up to around 10kHz.

I'm just kind of curious if this will be enough treble for me. the average bass player would be cringing at even this, but I like a clear piano sound (John Entwistle's live Alembic tone). I believe what I'm going for is a Steve Harris type "bright" but the bi-amping will take care of the lack of bottom end. I don't have a wide enough vocabulary to describe what his tone sounds like, but it has that "Harris Clatter" to it. and it always cuts through the mix due to how clean and clear it is. it has a lot of mids, but a lot of really bright treble, too (and he uses flatwounds!). my dilemma is, will the 6.5" midrange driver be plenty of treble for what I'm looking for? or should I opt in for the tweeter, too?

Get the tweeter with a defeat switch.

Don't ask us; ask Don. I'm sure he'll have an opinion for you.

I talked to him a bit today, but I feel bad because I kind of ramble a little on the phone, and I didn't want to take up his time. also, he doesn't listen to Iron Maiden, nor is he too familiar with Steve Harris. I'm not too familiar with the different frequencies. I screwed around with a graphic EQ at Guitar Center, and I have a little better idea of what each range is like, but still kind of fuzzy since I was running through a Fender 1x10 bass combo amp. I figured there were some more gear savvy people on here who wasn't running a one man show while pumping out world class cabs that could offer some help or decision swaying information.

This is certainly the safest option, although my bet is you won't need it. My 15/6 has no tweeter and sounds great, even for slap and even with my drum machine pumped through it for practice.

I have a LDS 1212/6.5/1 - that's with the tweeter, and I agree that you should get a tweeter with a defeat switch or attenuator. The 6.5 alone has plenty of high end, but the tweeter adds the crispness, and it is very noticeable in my opinion. It sounds like you want the crispness.
