On a another note, Don called me today to tell me that my long awaited 15PR400 loaded 2x15 is shipping out in the morning!!! I am dying to hear this thing with my streamliner. I haven't had a big cab since selling my 810 a few months ago. I am shaving something like 120lbs off my rig.....and it should be just as loud. |

It killed, never did I miss not having a (I always turn off the) tweeter or mid driver. Just fat and warm with no clank or sizzle. imho it sounds like what a bass cab should, I suppose if you are busy playing a million notes a minute and need to "cut though the mix" for your blistering solo, or just love hi mid clank - this cab is not for you. If on the other hand you like to sit in the pocket, lay down a nice groove and make people dance - ya know like a bass player might want to - you might find this cab appealing.

I feel it has a more open topend than my b810 loaded ampeg did. I have only run about 6 hours of program music through it with a couple hours of moderate volume noodling, but the cab already seems to be getting warmer. Oh, and it gets stupid loud.... |

It is not a 'safety' thing, or anything that you really need to do. The cab will be 'broken in' pretty well by the middle of your first gig.
I always recommend playing through a cab an hour or two prior to making a decision on if you dig it or not, since, in some cases (not many IME), the surrounds will loosen up a bit, making the cab sound just a smidge more balanced (i.e., a slightly higher bass to bright ratio).
Per Chef's comment, just play the darn thing at home for a couple hours, or just get 'er on the first gig, and you are good to go.
Doing special '60hz tone generator' or 'programmed music' or whatever will do not harm, but will not, IN ANY way result in a better result than playing those first couple of sets |

I have a problem with one particular neighbor so, I like to break in a cab alittle before it's first gig since I can't make it work at all at home and not get hassled. Low frequency noise is great for that. Also, since I tend to used big cabs, you really have to get them up loud before they start to work. |

Don suggested I give the cabinet a workout prior to gigging with it as he'd had some failure issues with the Faital drivers, however I did not have time to play through the cab prior to Friday nights gig. I did have time to hook it up and hammer on it with sine waves, loosening the suspension and checking the speakers for problems.
FYI the cab weighs in at 64 lbs, I was surprised at this as it sure seems a lot lighter. Regardless this is very easy for me (a fit 6' 2) to move around.
I'm quite happy with the cabinet, which at ~ $750 (how he can do this is beyond me) shipped is a heck of a deal. Don took about 5 weeks to deliver - as promised. Buy from him with confidence or spend a lot more $$$ and buy one from the other custom builders.

This is exactly why I had Don build mine.

He did it for what I would have had in materials alone, no brainer. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
